Braves Trade Deadline Rumors

Probably posted, Rosenthal just tweeted Braves showing interest in Joe Thatcher.

Under control for next year, then FA.

Definition of a left handed specialist.

If we don't get another starter, I'm cool with stacking the pen.

Would love to add a high leverage righty and a lefty if Frank deems the SP market too expensive.

Scratch that, Tom Hart just said the interest isn't too big, and worry his numbers are because of the big ballpark in SD.

I'd rather have James Russell, how much longer is he under control?

My bad, i didnt realize he was starting there. I havent gotten to see much tampa bay baseball. Scratch that, then.

He's a rover for them, not a 2B, that was a screwup on my behalf, playing LF, 2B (for some reason I thought Maddon had an aversion to playing Zobrist at his best position), but he plays mainly LF for them, also has done some work at 2B, 3B amd 1B

I really dont want to trade prospects for marginal upgrades to the rotation. Imagine if we still had Harrison Feliz and Locke. Just try to get a reliever and go with what we got

I agree, though I would go and get more than a reliever. We need an upgrade to the bench too (a replacement for Pena).

Feliz hasn't pitched in over a year, and Harrison has pitched 10 innings this season with an ERA over 8. Locke was a marginal prospect, at best, who was traded over four years ago, but I agree with your main point.

LHH are hitting .190/.235/.191 vs Thatcher this year.

He has been just as good on the road also. He would be a solid pickup that wouldn't cost us much.

They also have Alexi Amarista who bats LH and can play 2B, SS, CF. He is not great but fits what e are looking for or Logan Forsythe who can play everywhere but hits RH.

Rather than overpaying for a starter I'd get a lefty AND a righty for the pen. The bullpen is arguably more important in the playoffs and especially in the WS than starters are.

Cardinals continue pursuit of Jake Peavy and Alexei Ramirez with Carlos Martinez, Joe Kelly and Kolton Wong's names being mentioned #RUMORS

How are we going to compete with that?

We aren't, and we shouldn't.

Regarding pressure on ATL to make a Peavy deal: Just 7 of their last 58 games are against teams over .500. And they have an 8 1/2-game lead.

We shouldn't be trying to trade to secure the divisional crown; we should be trying to trade to improve our chances in the postseason. Now of course it's more or less a crapshoot, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try to improve.

Jake Peavy trade is imminent. Word is he has cleared out his locker...no word on where he's headed yet

Good point. I suspect Wren is particularly interested in players who've shown an ability to do well in the playoff wars. I'm a little surprised there hasn't been a bit more speculation about the San Francisco Giants as a possible trade partner. Tim Lincecum and Javier Lopez would fit our needs very well. They are both free agents after this year. Lincecum carries a big contract (22M) which might discourage other teams and will hold down the cost in terms of prospects going the other way.

Jake Peavy Trade Is Imminent

By Edward Creech [July 28 at 1:52pm CST]

Jake Peavy has cleared his belongings from the White Sox's clubhouse and is prepared to be traded soon, reports ESPNChicago.com's Bruce Levine. A clubhouse attendant, with Peavy it tow, walked out with five suitcases; but, there's no word on the exact timing of a possible deal or the destination.

"It is sad to think that this is probably my last day in here," Peavy said this morning. "We all realize the reality of the situation and I am prepared with that to happen soon. If I am not traded I would be happy to know the message here is we think we can win it all next year with you a part of it. I am reflecting on my four years here as we speak and getting a little caught up in the emotion. It is a sad day when you think it could be your last. This is a business and this is what we do. I will always cherish the people here and my time in Chicago."

The Orioles, Braves, A's, Red Sox and Cardinals have all been linked to the right-hander. Levine notes talks with the Braves have heated up since Tim Hudson's season-ending ankle injury.

It looks like it might be Oakland, the Braves, Red Sox and O's are saying it's not them.

I just double-checked Peavy's numbers. He has been pretty pedestrian since 2008, when he has played. Why we would get into a bidding war for his services is beyond me. There's no need for him in the regular season, and I'm not positive he'd be in our top three for the playoffs.
