This team is going to be straight garbage for the next several years while we pray that we can somehow find players that can come anywhere near the players that Heyward and Justin are. Why exactly did we even give Freeman all that money? He'll be out of his prime before this ship is patched back up. Might as well trade him too.
Also doesn't this set a horrible precedence that we aren't willing to even negotiate with are own players going forward? The front office looks really dumb at the moment. The Braves Way sucks by the way...

I was a strong supporter of hiring Hart, but it appears this is the Braves way. It was one of JS's biggest downfalls early in the decade, and the refusal to have dialogue with players and agents throughout negotiations put the Braves at a disadvantage and we paid dearly for it later in the decade.
As much as an a-hole Wren may have been, and I was one of his biggest supporters, and it appears he was a control freak, I thought we made signficant strides with him as GM in the regard of open lines of communication between agents, players, and the FO. It now appears that door is shut.

They haven't demanded anything because no one has negotiated with them.
It takes a special kind of stupid to think the Braves have not reached out in an attempt to extend both Justin and Jason. Does anyone here really think it didn't dawn on anyone in the Braves front office to approach 2 of the cornerstone players about sticking around?
Last offseason it was clear the Braves and Heyward were far apart in contract talks, and the only agreement that could be reached was to cover his last 2 arb years. Now that they are both 1 year from being FAs of COURSE they are going to test the market. Why in the world would they sign an extension before hitting the open market in exactly 12 months?
Hart knows they are going to become FAs because he (or the team before he was made GM) already had these talks with both players. He is not guessing or assuming anything. Anyone that can't understand this is a damn fool.
The two remaining choices are to either trade them now or keep them for 2015 and take the draft pick(s). In my opinion, if you're going to trade one you may as well go ahead and trade both because losing either one means no playoffs for Atlanta in 2015 (and possibly not in 2016 either). So in that case, get what you can for both, plunge into the international market for Tomas and one of the Cuban 2B guys, and get ready for 2017.

Agreed. I don't understand the outrage. The Braves clearly have an idea what it would take to lock up Heyward and/or Upton. The Braves also are clearly not comfortable paying for Heyward's potential over actual production. I don't care if it means a two year rebuild....the absolute worst thing thing that could happen to this organization is letting Heyward and Justin go to free agency and only getting 2 draft picks. I think Hart is being smart and realistic. Trading both may very well end up being the best option for the Braves.

I guess Hart's ability to predict the future will come in handy then. Makes total sense to just cut of communication with your best players and not even try to work something out this year.

Because Heyward hasn't produced at all... You guys realize that if he hit the way you all think he should that he would be able to command 30 mill a year right? Then none of you would want to pay that either because of the impending decline that only Jason Heyward will go through unlike Freddie Freeman who will always produce his same production for the rest of his contract life because insert reason here.
Good lord you guys are so defensive of Heyward. Nobody has said he's not a productive player.....I don't think I've seen anyone on this board say that. I've said over and over again how much I love him and how he plays the game. But the Braves clearly are not comfortable dishing out $18M-$20M a year for the current player he is and I'm in complete agreement.

They are enraged because they are fans...they don't want him to go for some reason...I'd turn my priorities to JUp at the very least. Heyward can be gone...
I think there is a lot of posturing going on right now. Nothing anyone is saying means what it would appear to mean at this point.
If people think the Braves are not negotiating with Heyward and JUpton, does that change anyone else's approach?
If people think Gattis is going to play LF, does that make people call about JHey or JUp?
If people think the Braves might rebuild, does that change anyone's approach?
If people think the Braves are going to reload rather than rebuild, does that change anything?
All of those things have been said in the past week, plus a hundred other tidbits. Its all posturing. Nobody knows much of anything at this point, and it is likely that none of it is true.
In a few weeks, a couple of deals will be made, and we MIGHT start to get a picture of the market. Even then there will be as many surprises as things we expect.
I love watching things play out this time of year.

We arent getting in a bidding war with the LA/NY/Phi markets of the world.
Thats why some/most would prefer to just overpay a little.

I can confirm for everyone here that Billy Ryan and John Coppolella have had extension discussions with Casey Close at Excel and that Heyward and the Braves aren't in the same ballpark. Close is valuing Heyward closer to $200m over a long term deal. The Braves don't want to pay that much. Hence Hart saying what we've heard over the past few days.
Anyone who thinks the Braves haven't had discussions are kidding themselves.
