Braves Trade Heyward, Walden to Cardinals for Miller and Tyrell Jenkins

Hart

“You love to hold on to your own guys as well as homegrown guys. But coming in last year, obviously I liked the player but we got no sense — or at least I didn’t — that this was a player that would have done something short-term (contract) for us. That wouldn’t preclude us from signing him on the open market, but we’d have 29 other clubs involved. A player gets to make his selection as to what it is he wants to do. I didn’t think it made sense for us to not be able to improve ourselves for the future and the short term by waiting to see if we might be the team he elected to sign with. I fully feel very strongly that this was a player that had earned the right to go to free agency next year, and that’s what he was going to do.”

At best, disingenuous, evasive and less than forthright.

Why not be a up front and honest with the fans and say he didn't want to extend Jason. Rather than imply that Jason was making unreasonable demands.

I thought integrity was one of his strong suits.

I'm sorry. I don't believe that.

He signed a 2 year deal last year. No way the Braves didn't want to talk about multiple years.

He wanted to stay here, but only for X dollars. Braves wanted to keep him, but only for Y dollars. I bet X-Y > 25 million.

Not a shocker.

Ramadon101 (not sure how legit of a poster he is nor what he wrote is true) but posted last week:

I can confirm for everyone here that Billy Ryan and John Coppolella have had extension discussions with Casey Close at Excel and that Heyward and the Braves aren't in the same ballpark. Close is valuing Heyward closer to $200m over a long term deal. The Braves don't want to pay that much. Hence Hart saying what we've heard over the past few days.

Anyone who thinks the Braves haven't had discussions are kidding themselves.

So if he really wants to be here 1) why couldn't he have approached the team and 2) why can't he re-sign here in the off season?

Something doesn't add up, but I have a feeling Jason's agent told the Braves what he'd be asking.

Sure he could have approached the team first. But let me ask this. Did Freeman approach the team first? Did Simmons? Did Kimbrel? I believe the team made the first approach in all three cases. The only case it was the player making the approach was Chris Johnson. But you're right that Jason could have made the first approach.

Don't believe in this stat. Any more than I believe that if you sign a 3 WAR player you win 3 more games.

The stats are relative. He is very good at D. But he didn't save 32 guys from crossing the plate. I think his arm saved us far more bases than his glove. He is way better than JUp who loses balls for no reason in RF.

Really like JHey...but can't see paying him that much money to play RF.

Jason saved 32 runs last year on defense. Runs created or any other advanced offensive stat is the same way. You just choose not to believe it.

At the moment, I'm seriously considering an alternative bargain: actively rooting against this team—at least for a few years.

Similar thoughts here, but I better change my username if I decide to go that way. I'll always root for my favorite players left on the team (will any be left soon? Maybe just Simmons?) but this good old boys club nonsense this organization has going on has got to go!

This is the same Cardinals team who for a few years recently was trotting out Holliday in LF and Allen Craig in RF. Check those defensive metrics.

Holiday has been at about -2 to -5 UZR the last 3 years. That's in 1300 innings. In 342 innings in 2013 Gattis was -7.3 UZR. Holliday is no longer a good defender. Gattis will be atrocious. There are different levels of bad.

Heyward confirmed there had been no talks with the #Braves about a long-term deal since Spring Training in 2013.

Heyward also reiterated that those talks in March 2013 "lasted minutes."

Maybe Ramadon101 can confirm or debunk this.

I know that ramadon has a professional connection to the organization, so it's not that I don't believe what he said (or maybe it was just misinformation); but I don't believe Jason has any reason to be making any of this up ... and that he is being so frank in these public comments leads me to believe he feels totally blind-sided.

You don't have to believe it. But most teams in baseball do. And you will see that when Heyward signs for a lot of money next winter or before that with St Louis. And I think he did save around 30 runs. He saved a ton of extra base hits last year and turned doubles into singles. Those add up.

Yeah. The Braves have had a really good run the last 4-5 years minus the last 6 weeks of 2014. So we blow it up? Makes sense.

We were a .500 ball club except for parts of april last year. We were a juggernaut alright.

Everyone on this board was clamoring for change. We were terrible last year. Halfway through the season no one had anything positive to say, so we shake it up and people complain. The alternative was that we let him go for a first round pick...that wouldn't be smart either.

Having read most all of the posts here today (no all, to be frank), I can come down solidly on understanding this trade.

Here's what it means to me:

1) The Braves knew that they could not lock Heyward up long-term. Their talks when they signed him to the two-year deal were probably revealing enough.

2) Gattis will not be traded. They're going to give him a crack at left field, a la Klesko, and hope for the best. Justin is going back to right field, which is his "normal" position.

3) Four years of Miller trumps one year of Jason and two years of Walden. There don't seem to be any health questions, so I am prepared to attribute '14 to the sophomore jinx.

4) Anyone who judges Jenkins by his stats are not looking at the whole pitcher. He indeed had shoulder surgery and missed 10 months of late '13 and early '14. In his first start after surgery, he faced two over the minimum in five hitless innings. He had a 3.28 ERA when he came back, and went on to play in the AFL and went 2-2, 2.22 in six starts. He'll start in AA and is a top 5 prospect moving forward.

5) Still don't know who is batting leadoff next season, though.

I wasn't totally against trading Heyward. But they traded him super early and only got Miller in return. Not a good move.
