Braves Trade Heyward, Walden to Cardinals for Miller and Tyrell Jenkins

What a difference a year makes. A year ago we were locking up most of our young talent and now it seems we are in rebuilding mode. Apparently Freeman wasn't happy that Heyward got traded. And why should he be. He knows he's now on a team that's going to suck for a couple of years. Can't imagine Kimbrel is happy either.

While we're at it: sucks to be Shelby Miller.

And you truely believe that that did not indeed happen? Front Office personal, whether it be Hart, JC or someone else talk to agents everyday on a number of different subjects and don't for a second believe that Hart and Co. didn't have a good read on the situation and a feel for exactly what it was going to take to sign Jason?

Why would Hart give strangely worded answers to the effect he was "assuming" things about Jason's demands. If he had a direct conversation he wouldn't have to assume.

After all this I hope Jason gives the Cards a handsome home team discount and goes on to have a Hall of Fame career with them.

LOL, call me crazy then (along with many others posting similar comments) because this an awful trade for a player of Heyward's ability and Walden is a solid set up man too.

The good old boys club must really overrated Miller the way some of y'all underrate Heyward.

So it's a poor trade because of Heywards potential? Seeing the anger on the board I would have been curious to see how everyone would act if we kept Heyward this year and all we got for him was a draft pick.

who did you think they would get for a .270 - 11 HR -- .380 SLG% corner OFer ??

Yes, he can play defense but so can Grego Blanco and Jorge Constanza.
I loved watching JHey but people are forgetting the Braves went all but a week without scoring a run - losing 400 innings from their starters and have no options at the Minor League level. For any off these issues.

again, who did you think they would get for Heyward ?? His value was his value

His value was of a 6 WAR player. And no Blanco and Conztana can not play defense at the level that Jason can. And really? Batting average and slug % to judge someones offensive value? The Braves had 4 hitters at the end of the season that could get on base. They just traded two of them in 3 days. Last I saw you needed to get on base to actually score. It's going to be a rough 2015.

Heyward confirmed there had been no talks with the #Braves about a long-term deal since Spring Training in 2013.

Heyward also reiterated that those talks in March 2013 "lasted minutes."

That doesn't mean his agent hasn't had contact.

Media posturing? Happens all the time....JS was the master of it in his prime. Remember in July 1993, we have not had any contact with the San Diego Padres over any players let alone a player the caliber of Fred McGriff (this on air with Skip Carey during a telecast) only 2 days later to acquire McGriff. You think that only took 2 days to materialize? Doubt it

JS said in the media and told David Justice "he'd bet his house that he won't be traded" only to be traded a few days later to Cleveland.

It's all coach, FO speak, whatever you wanna call it. Wren was pretty forthright but played the media to get an advantage as well, ala acquiring Bourne when all indications we're we were after Pence

Heyward said he and agent had extension talks that lasted "minutes" w/ Wren after 2012 season, and no such talks since w/ #Braves

Oh. Wren. That explains it. This is all Wren's fault. I KNEW IT! So relieved. I thought the team was being run by a jar of mayonnaise.

I wasn't totally against trading Heyward. But they traded him super early and only got Miller in return. Not a good move.

I don't know how it isn't, it was clearly the best offer on the table. Perhaps thats exactly what his value was? :Gasp:

"We’re going to continue to explore a lot of avenues with what we do with the ballclub. As we sit here today, there’s certainly a good chance Justin is back with us next year….I’ve had conversations [about an extension] but they have not been anything in depth so it would be unfair for me to comment much on Justin in that regard. We’ll certainly continue to talk with his agent but I don’t really have a definitive answer as of yet.”

- Hart on Justin Upton.

Maybe the Braves have a telepath on the payroll who helped Hart formulate his "assumptions." Still a phone call to confirm the telepath's good work seems like a good idea to me.

After Jason Heyward was traded to St. Louis on Monday after five seasons with Atlanta, the Gold Glove right fielder said he hoped Braves officials would approach him this offseason to discuss a long-term contract extension, but never did.

Here’s the first questions in Heyward’s conference call Monday afternoon with a few Atlanta reporters, which will be published at myAJC.com in full later Monday.

What’s your reaction to trade, was this something you were expecting at this point?

“I didn’t know what to expect going into the offseason, but as time went and I didn’t ever see anybody reach out to me as far as wanting to discuss an extension to be here longer than next year, I kind of got (the impression) that I would get traded.”

(Braves president of baseball operations) John Hart said since he came in last year he never got an indication other than you would go to free agency, not that a long-term contract extension was something that could be worked out. What’s your view of that?

“To be honest, the Braves front office are the ones that would have to come to me about a deal, about the extension, about me being here longer than 2015, for that to actually happen. And that never took place last offseason. I threw the two-year deal out on the table (that he signed in February 2014) because I didn’t want to go through the arbitration process anymore. I wanted to go play baseball and I didn’t want to come back after another offseason and go OK, we’re once again talking about numbers and performance and this and that (for arbitration). I just wanted to go play. I wanted our next conversation to be about me possibly being in Atlanta for a long time. And that conversation never came about. So I took it as, that’s not what they wanted to happen.”

Yes. I don't trust this front office at all.

What gives you more of a reason to believe Heyward... if it came out that he didn't want to extend then it could hurt his value because it seems like he's all about the money. The truth is we have no idea which party is being honest. Its convenient for Heyward if the only contact was through his agent because he can make a comment like this and keep it a half truth. If you think we could keep Heyward, you're being delusional.

"We’re going to continue to explore a lot of avenues with what we do with the ballclub. - Hart on Justin Upton.

So Justin warrants "conversations" and Heyward warrants "assumptions." Words do have meaning. And Mr. Hart chooses his with care.
