Braves Trade Heyward, Walden to Cardinals for Miller and Tyrell Jenkins

Horrible trade.

Our 2nd best RP under control for 2 years, and Heyward for Miller and who?

No way this was the best offer out there.

I figured he wouldnt re-sign but there is no way this was the best offer, stupid move.

We'll see how much he wants in contract talks and if the 200 million talk is real or not.

"We’re going to continue to explore a lot of avenues with what we do with the ballclub. As we sit here today, there’s certainly a good chance Justin is back with us next year….I’ve had conversations [about an extension] but they have not been anything in depth so it would be unfair for me to comment much on Justin in that regard. We’ll certainly continue to talk with his agent but I don’t really have a definitive answer as of yet.”

- Hart on Justin Upton.

I guess that means they talked about an extension when they traded for him.

His value was of a 6 WAR player. And no Blanco and Conztana can not play defense at the level that Jason can. And really? Batting average and slug % to judge someones offensive value? The Braves had 4 hitters at the end of the season that could get on base. They just traded two of them in 3 days. Last I saw you needed to get on base to actually score. It's going to be a rough 2015.

Who would you expect the Braves to get for Heyward?
apparently a 6 WAR doesn't carry as much weight with MLB executives as it does with message board typers / fantasy players.

again, who did you think the Braves could have gotten for JHey ???

"I just wanted to go play. I wanted our next conversation to be about me possibly being in Atlanta for a long time. And that conversation never came about. So I took it as, that’s not what they wanted to happen."

After Jason Heyward was traded to St. Louis on Monday after five seasons with Atlanta, the Gold Glove right fielder said he hoped Braves officials would approach him this offseason to discuss a long-term contract extension, but never did.

Here’s the first questions in Heyward’s conference call Monday afternoon with a few Atlanta reporters, which will be published at myAJC.com in full later Monday.

What’s your reaction to trade, was this something you were expecting at this point?

“I didn’t know what to expect going into the offseason, but as time went and I didn’t ever see anybody reach out to me as far as wanting to discuss an extension to be here longer than next year, I kind of got (the impression) that I would get traded.”

(Braves president of baseball operations) John Hart said since he came in last year he never got an indication other than you would go to free agency, not that a long-term contract extension was something that could be worked out. What’s your view of that?

“To be honest, the Braves front office are the ones that would have to come to me about a deal, about the extension, about me being here longer than 2015, for that to actually happen. And that never took place last offseason. I threw the two-year deal out on the table (that he signed in February 2014) because I didn’t want to go through the arbitration process anymore. I wanted to go play baseball and I didn’t want to come back after another offseason and go OK, we’re once again talking about numbers and performance and this and that (for arbitration). I just wanted to go play. I wanted our next conversation to be about me possibly being in Atlanta for a long time. And that conversation never came about. So I took it as, that’s not what they wanted to happen.”

This is gonna get ugly. Freeman is pissed. The fans are pissed. Heyward is doubling down on how he wanted to stay. The FO is looking pretty bad right now.

Him saying how he wanted to stay - if true - makes me sick.

Mind-boggling stupid if they never even approached him about an extension if he's right.

Worst case he says no, best maybe a few mil apart.

I'd have to now what other team were offering. But I think trading Heyward this early suggests they just wanted to move him as quickly as possible which means not getting the best deal.

The truth is we have no idea which party is being honest.

Hart's own words are a clue. With respect to Justin Upton he uses the word "conversations." With Heyward he uses the word "assumption." If he had reached out and made a phone call to Jason's agent that would be a conversation. It is not hard to deconstruct this. Just look at the words Hart is using.

What gives you more of a reason to believe Heyward... if it came out that he didn't want to extend then it could hurt his value because it seems like he's all about the money. The truth is we have no idea which party is being honest. Its convenient for Heyward if the only contact was through his agent because he can make a comment like this and keep it a half truth. If you think we could keep Heyward, you're being delusional.

I don't see how Heyward would hurt his value by "being all about the money." You think ball clubs are oblivious that almost every professional player is about the money? Did AROD get less money because he was all about the money?

So you actually think the Braves didn't take the best offer available?

This place is the greatest.

A minimum of due diligence would have included Hart or Coppy picking up the phone and having a chat with Heyward's agent before doing this. A minimum. Their not doing that is a disgrace and professional incompetence.

oh please, you're smarter than that.

everybody knows what was what that needs to know.

the braves don't want to come out and say that heyward isn't worth the money. the player doesn't want to come out and say that yeah, it's all about the benjamins. this is how this game is always played. honestly can't believe this is even a discussion. do you honestly believe the braves didn't have any idea what heyward wanted? that's the dumbest thing i've ever heard.

Sorry... I don't see it quite as cut and dry as you do.

Heyward was gone regardless, I think some people are in denial about that. Yes it hurts, but that's the reality for us.

While true, they never even talked an extension with him and he wanted to stay.

Which makes it even more stupid.
