Aint happening. Justin would not get close to Seager/Jackson/ AND Walker. If I were the Mariners I wouldn't even trade Seager for Justin because of control. They're looking to add to Cano & Seager so that wouldn't interest them. I would love to get my hands on DJ Peterson though.

Justin plus Carp could probably get Walker or Paxton.

If the interest is mutual why not defer some of the money. I know the Braves haven't done this pretty much ever but we know there is lots of cash coming in the future.

Even the Padres won 77 games by scoring only 535 runs. Guess who their top 2 hitters were. Rene Rivera and Seth Smith. This idea that offense is so linear is ridiculous. We had 4 starting players being above average hitters and still sucked. Do we need an all star team of position players to have a good offense? Freeman, Upton, and Heyward will all get 20+ million a year. How many 20 mill a year players does it take? The offense was fundamentally flawed and needed change. We could do a lot worse than to build an offense around a great hitter like Freeman who has been consistent and hits well with RISP and Gattis who has legit 40 HR power.

If we were able to sign Lester and trade off JUP for someone like Walker, this rotation would be absolutely incredible going forward. Lester, Teheran, Miller, Wood, Walker would be the best in the game in my opinion, if not top 2-3 at the very least. Also, I'd be down with dumping BJ by using Minor as bait.

Our rotation this past season was fairly good too. We still managed to lose a lot of close low scoring games. If we trade Justin and strictly rely on having a strong rotation we are looking at more 1-0 shutout losses again.

Agreed but it's not the smartest way to use our available money. We don't need 5 stud SP's when you only use 3 or 4 in the postseason if we make it. Just sign a veteran like Peavy or Masterson and we've got a very good rotation next year. We need offense

I'm not saying I disagree. I think a rotation of Teheran, Minor, Miller, Peavy and Wood is fantastic. I just can't decide which direction this team is going. A lineup with JUP and Gattis is much better. I think this team is going towards a pitching heavy top and working offense in. I'm interested to see what happens!

That's my opinion, too, and that's why I outlined something I could see happening if the Lester talks work out. Obviously with the Justin trade we might have to include a better prospect or receive one not as good as Jackson or something like that--a tweak or two--but I think that team is doable and competitive.

I feel like I'm not in the popular opinion here, but I'm relatively down with the idea of pitching first, offense second. I think if we want to win now, trading away both Gattis and JUP is an awful idea. But, we can certainly trade the two, plug holes this year and have a great team going forward. With a rotation stated above, we WILL have opportunities to do more than compete moving forward. We save money with these moves and can do work with the offense going forward. This whole thing is interesting because my opinions continually change... but, Hart is definitely working on something here. Whatever it is.

According to a mAjor league source the Red Sox offer to Jon Lester falls into $110-$120 range over six years.

Reasonable.

We would be better off using that kind of money bringing back Justin Upton. I don't think the budget can be stretched to accommodate both.

Would you rather give Lester somewhere in the neighborhood of ~$100MM or J. Upton somewhere in the neighborhood of ~$200M? We haven't talked about Justin's FA value on here very much, but I suppose it isn't outside of the realm of possibility he gets somewhere around (or slightly south) of that figure.
