Braves donate Justin Upton to Padres for prospects

This is cracking me the **** up right now.

Interesting comments by JS in new article on MLB.com by Richard Justice

http://m.braves.mlb.com/news/articl...-a-baseball-institution-after-almost-50-years

"You had to identify the core," Schuerholz said. "Who are the guys you can build around? And then ... if you had young players in the pipeline and they were ready, you couldn't leave them down there. That would be ruinous. You had to make room for them. You had to bring in some role players every year and freshen it up a bit. It just kept the clubhouse fresh. But you had to be careful who you selected. Was it the right guy? Most of the times, it was. Sometimes it wasn't."

Now this comment had nothing to do with the current roster situation and where the Braves as of today sit, but it does give us a good indication of JS and the FO's philosophy on building a team, and it was pretty apparent that Heyward was not a part of that. I don't think it was any indication of the player that Heyward was, as I'm sure the Braves loved him and the way he played....but just weren't willing to give in to Heyward's contractual demands going forward basing it on "potential" instead of actual production considering our financial situation and constraints which I have harped on many times before.

Some of you might remember that I did an internship with MLB.com way back in 2006. I sometimes read Mark Bowman, remember that MLB.com did not think highly of my abilities and feel the sudden urge to chug bleach.

Any chance that Mark Bowman is related to Bob Bowman, former head of MLBAM, recently appointed EVP of MLB Business?

Because that would explain a lot.

The Markakis signing happened at the exact same time as the M's traded an OFer for a starting pitcher. Things are lining up perfectly for JUp (and maybe some cash) to the M's for Walker. I bet it happens before the weekend.

Woo! Can't wait for that Freddie-Gattis-Markakis/BJ middle of the order.

Yeah it's going to be ugly for a while. Once JUp is shipped out for pitching I don't really see any way to improve the offense in any meaningful way. It is simply impossible to construct a good offense with Simmons, CB, CJ and BJ as starters, no matter who the other 4 guys happen to be.

I agree with this. Getting an outfielder was the precursor to trading Justin.

That's why plugging black holes at CF and 3B should have been priority No. 1.

Assuming JUp is traded for cheap players, the bench is filled with cheap-ish players, and including BJ and Uggla, the payroll currently sits around ~$86M.

There is certainly still room to add to the offense. I see no reason Hart can't bring in a LHed platoon partner for CJ and someone other than Cedric Hunter to take over in CF.

CB $0.5
Freeman $8.5
Peraza $0.5
CJ $6.0
Simmons $3.0
Markakis $11.0
BJ $14.5
Gattis $0.5

C $2.0
Goss $0.5
Terdo $0.5
Hunter $0.5
LHer $1.0

Teheran $1.0
Wood $0.5
Minor $6.0
Miller $0.5
Hale (Walker?) $0.5

Kimbrel $9.0
Johnson $1.6
Shae $0.5
Avilan $0.5
Varvaro $1.0
Russel $2.5
Viz $1.0

Uggla $13.0
total $86.6

It's December 3rd. I'm very concerned about 3B and CF too but let's see how this all plays out.

I realize that. I'm just saying, fix that before Justin or Gattis are traded. Period. Unless someone just magically blows us away with a dramatic overpay.

Gattis and/or JUp could very well be used to fixed either position. There were rumors of Gattis for Fowler plus a prospect floating around. Not saying that's the best course of action, but options may be out there.

One thing is certain: a trade is coming!

I was on board with the Gattis and BJ for Fowler and a prospect trade. Don't recall if that was shot down entirely or could still be worked out.

Houston apparently wanted no part of BJ in a deal given his contract, that is what ended the talks at the time IIRC. But they are still interested in Gattis along with other teams of course. I think it is only the latter talks that are not dead.

Agreed. CJ is the one guy who maybeee we could trade and upgrade at 3b. I'd like to see us extend Jup, put gattis at C, and trade Bethancourt + to fill out the rotation.

I'd rather keep CJ. Such an important part of our offense against lefties. I don't want to go back to sucking ass against lefties.

Fredi heard he won a gold glove and wants to try him in CF. Thinks it makes sense cause he is a leadoff guy now.

The Braves were said to be looking for a LHed compliment to CJ earlier this offseason. I'm sure this is still the case.
