GM/Winter Meetings Thread

A few random thoughts on Drew.

1) Could play third as well as second. This is great because third is as much a potential problem.

2) Could potentially allow Peraza to play center. Also great because center is a big area of need as well.

3) Our infield defense would be quite strong. Nice. But would be even nicer if we didn't have a predominantly fly ball oriented starting pitching rotation. I really hope our fifth starter is a ground ball pitcher because our staff as is currently constituted is going to be hurt by our poor outfield defense (assuming Gattis in left).

4) Would reduce the odds of Peraza making the team out of spring training. A good thing imo for reasons having to do with service clock considerations and the benefit Peraza would derive from some seasoning in AAA.

Plus it gives them another veteran presence on the field, which has been lacking.

#Braves want to add SP, 2B, backup catcher, thru FA or trades. Don't feel compelled to do it right away.Could wait till spring for need or 2

I'd like them to take a long look at Brandon Mcarthey if they go the FA route.

New AJC article ahead of Winter Meetings with this quote from Hart. I'm just surprised he's making a point of mentioning Kohn. I was viewing him as AAA roster filler. Sounds like he has a real chance of making team. We certainly seem to be positioning for a trade of Carpenter or Russell.

“We came (into the offseason) looking to add some pitching to our club, and that’s hopefully what we’ve done,” Hart said. “And to do it we had to trade one of our outfielders that we like in Heyward. It was a good baseball deal, we solved a pitching hole we had, and gave ourselves something for the future. We’ve also added a bullpen guy (free agent Jim Johnson) and (reliever Michael) Kohn as well; we like him quite a bit. So we’ve been focusing on the pitching."

If you go look at his MLB numbers, Kohn was a pretty good reliever with some upside

When we signed him, I knew his name but wasn't sure of his stats; so I looked him up and immediately hoped he would be given a solid chance. His stats were solid, good WHIP and his FB is apparently in the mid-90s with a good rotation on it.

Kohn was a solid pick-up, if he can cut down the walks a bit he could be a very solid addition. Kohn also had a Major League deal with Tampa Bay before they outrighted him to make room on their 40-man roster. Kohn was pretty solid last season and in past years too. He deserves a shot to replace Carpenter or Varvaro. Plus we could use another 40-man roster spot or two. So it makes sense to move at least one of Carpenter or Varvaro for someone that doesn't need to be added to our 40-man roster this year.

Kohn is a classic case of us picking up a guy with an electric arm and talent and hopefully turning him around. We've been good at it, I like it. Think he will be a contributor.

Kohn could be the next Carpenter. Right now we have Kimbrel, Carpenter, Simmons, Viz, Johnson, Kohn, Varvaro, Hale, Russell, Avilan and Shreve competing for seven spots.

That's 11 relievers with only 7 spots open, but I would include another lefty in Thomas making that number 12. Plus Kohn would need to be added to the 40-man roster as he's on a minor league deal. While others on the list are out of options so we couldn't just send them to the minors, at least not without them clearing waivers first. Speaking of that, isn't Viz among those out of options now? If so he should be a lock to make the bullpen. The good news is all our lefties besides Russell, and including Thomas, have at least one option remaining. That's if I am correct about Avilan having one left? I think he does anyway (someone correct me if I am wrong). I'm pretty sure the only righties with options remaining are Simmons and Hale (again correct me if I am wrong).

That said, my top 7 from that list would be as follows: Kimbrel, Simmons, Viz, Shreve, Russell, Hale, Kohn. But I know Johnson will get a spot so that would leave out someone from my top 7 (probably either Kohn or one of the three with minor league options left unless Russell is traded). This list also is telling on the need to move at least one of Carpenter or Varvaro. Further, according to Bowman there was some consideration by the Braves about non-tendering Russell (if so that may mean he is going to be moved too).

Certainly no risk in giving Kohn a look. He just looks a bit more to me like a Juan Jaime type from a statistical standpoint versus Carpenter when we claimed him on waivers. Career BB / 9 of 6 over 110 IP. The fact that Hart made note of him though leads you to believe they feel he could travel the Carpenter path.

As far as major league minimum guys . . . Simmons, Viz, Hale, Avilan, and Shreve all have minor league options remaining. So that can help us clear the logjam.

With Walden gone, I'd really like to see us get a more dependable LH specialist than Avilan / Shreve to pitch high leverage innings. I don't expect us to play on the multi-year guys, but hope to see us do something.
