The Gattis Thread...

He is a decent catcher. But that wastes his best position, which is bat. And as somebody said above, how long can a 260-pound man get in and out of a squat with knee and back issues? Might as well flip him.

Exactly, plus he's already shown he's due for potentially a month on the DL anyway.

Great story and I am rooting for him but he was a butcher in the outfield. I agree that he should be in the AL, get something good for him while we can and wish him well.

While I know practically nothing about the Rangers farm, at first glance I am not too impressed with Thompson. Gallo is who I would hold out for. Don't care who else is included past that.

I think a deal that looks something along the lines of... Evan Gattis / Tyler Pastornicky / James Russell / Aaron Northcraft for Jurickson Profar / Alex Gonzalez / Nomar Mazara is something that could be a benefit to both clubs as well.

Rangers: Gattis would be going home to Texas and would slot in as the Rangers everyday DH while catching 15-20 games per year. Pastornicky would become a Utility player capable of playing 2B/OF and SS in a pinch. Russell would become Texas's main LH relief option since they currently don't have a proven lefty in their bullpen. Northcraft is simply a guy who would give them depth at SP by "replacing" Gonzalez. If the Rangers insisted on a little better prospect than Northcraft, the Braves could decide to include J.R Graham or Cody Martin instead.

Braves: Profar would slot in as our everyday 2B until Peraza is ready and when he is indeed ready Profar could slide over to 3B or to the outfield (Peraza could be moved to the OF instead if Profar is the better defender at 2B), Gonzalez has the look of a future #2/#3 starter who could possibly be ready as soon as next season but would most likely benefit from a full season at AAA. Mazara instantly becomes our best outfield prospect who profiles as a power hitting RF'er and a potential middle-of-the-order type bat. The Braves could try to pry Nick Williams away instead of Mazara or could also look at Lewis Brinson instead of Mazara. One more name to consider instead of the previous mentioned outfielders (Mazara, Williams, and Brinson) is Ryan Rua who is a power hitting 3B and got his first call up this past season.

It really pains me to say it cause Gattis is probably my favorite Brave now that Heyward is gone, but it's probably the right decision to move him. Good career move for him to be in the al too. I'm just mad I can't really wear 2 of my 3 jerseys if we trade him(Heyward and Gattis) lol I'd love to get Profar plus though, great buy low opportunity.

the issue with Gattis, is we don't know what his value is. So we can't really speculate. With Justin, he's been traded once and is generating a lot of interest in a pretty strapped FA pool. Gattis should be worth a haul. He is a 2+ WAR catcher, as a righty with oodles of pop.

No idea about Ranger's farm system. I did see a tweet that they wanted DH help, RH power, and a back up C. Gattis fills that in one blow.

I love watching Gattis hit. The ball jumps off his bat. Love the story. But he can also be frustrating when he's swinging at awful pitches or has a defensive blow up. Watching him in the outfield is painful.

If the Braves feel like they get a long term answer at LF, CF, RF, 3B, 2B or C then make it happen. Get that guy and whatever other parts you can.

Gattis' contract and control should net us a long term answer at a spot. I'd really want it to be a position player. If we can get a guy to fill OF plus a potential starter in the next couple of years, then that's a really good offer.

I hate to see him go. He's been a great story and a great Brave. I love him constantly being called a non prospect by KLaw and then carrying a MLB team for a couple of months.

What concerns me about all this that I don't think Bethancourt is a ML catcher. Not from what I saw.

I'm also concerned about a lineup that has Melvin, CJ, Simmons and Bethancourt in it. We could carry Bethancourt if the rest of the offense was solid. But it is far from that.

Trading Gattis would be the correct move. You have to be able to rely on guys and it's best position is DH so we can't extent him.

Though, I worry about thethe's mental healthy if Gattis is traded.

When I saw one of the Ranger prospects being talked about was a guy named Alex Gonzalez, I shuddered a bit. But then I found out Gonzalez attended Oral Roberts University and having him on the team could cut down on training room costs.

I'd be happy for Gattis because his career would be greatly extended at the DH position. It would also be great for him to be a 10 year player so the initial doubters can look even worse!

I'll leave this here as well.

Spoke with #Braves’ Hart. Adamant about keeping JUp/Gattis unless he gets exactly what he wants. Could add SP, 2B and go for it instead.

Good posturing, but I don't believe it. We don't even really have a place to play both unless we use CB as a back up catcher, which I'm not opposed to.

There is still nothing stopping us from playing Gattis at catcher... Our team - as constructed, still isn't that bad. Obviously better with Heyward... but Miller is an upgrade to the rotation and it's not as if Markakis is trash

It's been said in other threads, but there are a few 2Bs out there who could do a decent job at a decent price. We're still short a couple of OFs and it would be nice to jettison Chris Johnson and cobble something together over at 3B, but I don't think we're hopeless quite yet.

If Gattis has another great year behind the plate, he will be at his peak value to trade and Bethancourt might actually be ready after a year as a backup. Putting him in LF for a year is going to kill his value.

If they keep them both AND
- add someone to play 2B
- add a SP
- add someone to play CF
- add a LHed bat to platoon with CJ at 3B

...this team might win 90 games.

Main issue is they only have about $10M to add all those parts. Would it be wise to let JUp walk for a draft pick to take a shot with an 85-90 win team?
