Braves donate Justin Upton to Padres for prospects

The only problem I see with packaging Johnson with Upton is who needs both other than San Francisco???

There would definitely have to be a third team involved since SF definitely doesn't appear to have the pieces to get Justin alone.

Word was that Dayton was kicking the tires...wonder if this news could lead to a J-Up/Johnson for Moustakas, Finnegan, ???

I didn't think they could trade Finnegan until July since he went in last year's draft. Could they make him a PTBNL this far away from July? I would like to have him in our bullpen, though, and Moustakas would be a good addition as well.

Correct - Finnegan would have to be a PTBNL. As would Bradley Zimmer if we were dealing with Cleveland (since they were sniffing around as well).

I could even see Hart trading him to Seattle without getting Walker, but it would be as an absolute last resort and Jack Z would have to gut the farm quite a bit...Justin for Alex Jackson (PTBNL), Ketel Marte, and Patrick Kivlehan maybe.

When the Braves talked to other teams about Justin Upton, their strongest ask in prospects was to SD; believe they match up best with SD.

Who is feeding Nightengale this?

Packaging Gattis as a form of getting rid of BJ

and packaging Justin as a form of getting rid of CJ

Dreams can come true.

The same person feeding him alcohol -- either the poor dude naturally slurs words or is a total lush, because it seems like he's barely been able to keep it together on MLB Network.

The #SFGiants have had trade discussions with the #Braves about Justin Upton while waiting for Lester decision.

The #Braves are packaging Chris Johnson with Justin Upton in their early talks with the #SFGiants.

The Braves will take less if the Giants will take CJ. No clue as to who the Braves are looking at from SF. Blanco thrown in wouldn't hurt.

Braves previously asked for a package including Kyle Crick from Giants. So he is one player they seem interested in.

Just did a quick look to see who the Giants have in the way of prospects and they are heavy in pitching prospects and not much else.

EDIT: Crick--as cited in the post above--is regarded as their top prospect.

the justin upton/chris johnson rumored combo to giants makes some sense. but i'm told thats a week old & "not happening."

Was told #sfgiants like Justin Upton but would consider him ($14.5M next year) only if they don't sign Lester.

MLBTR reported earlier tonight: "The Giants were called by Lester earlier tonight to inform them that he was signing elsewhere, assistant GM Bobby Evans told reporters (including Alex Pavlovic of the Bay Area News Group). As Evans put it, “We did not receive a rose.”

So now it seems the Giants are out on Lester, so maybe that wasn't old news about the Giants and Braves talking. It could be that they're just now talking about it again (same as last week) since they found out Lester was not happening. Whatever the case, it make sense that they would talk again now if they are not already doing so.

FWIW, Nightengale has come back and reiterated his original report about the Upton/CJ package even after Heyman said the discussions were old. He must be confident in his source.

Yes, #sfgiants spoke with #braves and like Justin Upton. Chris Johnson wouldn't be a fit as part of any trade.

My head hurts.

There has been multiple times I have read about the Braves trying to combine both BJ and CJ in deals over the last few weeks. So it makes sense that they would continue to do so with teams that have less to offer in prospects (and that certainly applies to the Giants) when discussing either Justin Upton or Evan Gattis.

Nightengale is about as tight as they come from an insider perspective with JS so unlike so many others, the guy probably had the best insight as to what the Braves may be doing.

And as far as Nightengale being incoherent, I'm sure spending so much time talking to the master of words in JS and Hart would have anyone stumped and mumbling things together, lol!

In Harts interview tonight, every answer he gave started with "Look" whether it was about the team, finances, a player, his golf game, and getting into the swing of things back in the role he's in. Look!
