GM/Winter Meetings Thread

Call it a gut feeling.

Hart isn't going to sign a SP until he knows the returns for Gattis and/or JUp because a SP may very well be part of the return for either. So if we see Hart sign a SP we can logically assume the two sluggers (or at least one of them) are staying in Atlanta.

Volquez, Peavy, Brett Anderson, Harang and Vogelsong still out there. I've listed them in order of preference.

I don't like that list at all, given what's been reported that the better ones on that list are asking. The possible exception may be Anderson, I haven't heard much on him. How about you? I would be okay signing him on a one year deal, possibly with an option year, depending on the price.

BTW, I have no interest in Harang unless it is for 1 million again as I believe last year was mostly a fluke. He is asking for too much money and at least two year deal now too. So that leaves him off my list entirely.

Note, I also believe Hale could do just as good or better in the rotation as most on that list. In fact, if you put a good defender at second and third (replace CJ there), then he'd do even better being a ground ball pitcher with Simmons and overall better infield defense behind him.

About 6M/projected win. Except for Lester that has been the going rate for pitchers.

For FA hitters it has been closer to 9M/win.

Last off-season pitchers were getting paid more. There has been a big change this year.

Seems like the shift to a truly pitching dominant league has happened. The 4.07 runs per game in 2014 was the lowest since 1981. Pitching is everywhere right now so legit hitters are at a premium and it's finally reflecting that in salaries. It's why I would do my best to lock up Upton right now. The chances of getting a hitter as good as him anytime soon is remote.

See my comment this aft in the Upton thread.

Trade Gattis for prospects and sign Peavy to a 2 year contract and lets do this thang... with the worst bottom half of a lineup in the history of any baseball team ever in any league. Including T-Ball.

I wish I could somehow be confident BJ could actually turn it around... if that could happen and we could trade Gattis and CJ, we could really have a net upgrade on the team... I don't think its impossible. I do think hitting coaches have more influence than people think...

SP, lineup is better.

I guess it could be argued the lineup is a slight bit better (could also be easily argued ours is)... but the Mets do not have a better rotation... definitely not. Wheeler is still inconsistent and who knows how Harvey will come back. Outside of them, there is nothing special there

I don't know... I think alot of people forget how horrendous alot of lineups were in the late 80s and early 90s... I mean, when the Braves went worst to first in '91, the lineup was atrocious in today's standards. Obviously defense and pitching made up for a lot and we do not have that caliber at the moment in either spot.
