Braves donate Justin Upton to Padres for prospects

I really like Tyson Ross but I don't see him being available. It's kind of counter productive for the Pads to add a bat but lose one of their best pitchers. I think the best trade for the Braves and Padres is a few guys from: Wisler, Spangenberg, Liriano, Renfroe, Turner, Joe Ross

I'd definitely agree, but think they're trying to hedge on giving up either of the OFs so they'd still have them when Justin walks next winter.

IF San Diego is indeed in hotter pursuit than the others, ideally I'd tell Preller Wisler, Spangenberg, and his choice of Liriano or Renfroe is enough to get it done and if he wants to clear Quentin or Maybin's deal off his books he has to take Johnson back. We'd be happy to throw Varvaro in to "help" in the pen for a couple of International Signing Slots or Jesse Hahn.

Agreed. I think that might be a little steep for one year of Justin though. I'd be happy with Wisler and either Liriano or Renfroe but gladly take Spangenberg too.

I hope the mystery team is the Cubs. They are stacked in the farm system. They have some hitters and I would love to see a long term solution as a position player.

I definitely think it's too steep, and I wouldn't pay it personally. That said, there are a whole hell of a lot less options available at this point if Preller's still trying to make another impact deal so that's what I'd ask for. Hart's said all along that we're not giving these guys away just to shake things up.

San Diego just got a better TV deal as well, and the Central Fund continues to grow (with them getting a HUGE chunk of cash from it). Considering the deal they're getting on Kemp, there's no reason to think that they're less capable of offering Justin market money to stay there long-term than we are.

Considering the weather and Justin's preference to remain somewhat out of the spotlight there could be a lot worse places to spend the next 8 years.

Obtaining pitchers from SD seems a lot like signing hitters from Colorado.

Agreed. A pitcher that makes half his starts in Petco is going to have some seriously skewed numbers. I'd be nervous about taking on any of their big league arms for that reason.

Don't get me wrong because San Diego is great, but baseball is a summer sport do we really buy that players put that much stock in weather? I can't think of a single player whom that has persuaded.

84 with 55% humidity all summer vs. 94 with 90% humidity in Atlanta wouldn't sway you a bit?

7:30 games in that park are like playing indoors without the roof over your head.

@Ken_Rosenthal
Sources: #Padres, #Rays discussing significant trade. Talks involve a number of players. Wil Myers would be main piece going to SD.

@Ken_Rosenthal
Not known if SD-TB trade is close. Would involve some of #Padres’ better prospects and likely take them out of Justin Upton sweepstakes.

I'm staying patient but really going to be pissed off if Hart scared off everyone and we're stuck with just a draft pick.

What if we also get a strong season out of Justin that helps the team get into the playoffs. That plus the draft pick would seem to be a pretty good outcome.
