Personally, I would have gone with lagan and derelict, but your usage of admiralty terms is commendable nonetheless.
I'll say this-- I wasn't thrilled with the return on the Upton trade when I first heard about it as well. I hadn't been in touch with my contact in a while (not surprising given the level of activity that has been going on since the WM) but he told me this morning that Chad MacDonald did indeed play a large role in identifying the talent from SD and is extremely high on Fried and Dustin Peterson as high-risk, high reward types, and firmly believes that Jace Peterson and Mallex Smith could be valuable bench pieces (if not turning into serviceable regulars). I don't think the plan was to bring in "another LaStella" but rather someone who could play around the IF like Prado could and still have good ABs which Jace fits the mold of. Dustin is a wildcard, no doubt, but Chad is very high on his power potential, he's "very coachable" and they think he will be able to square up the ball with more regularity and authority going forward. Fried, of course, is the jewel in the package and the Braves are apparently very high on him. I have no intel as to what else was offered at this time but hearing this made me feel a little bit better about the trade.
