Personally, I would have gone with lagan and derelict, but your usage of admiralty terms is commendable nonetheless.

I'll say this-- I wasn't thrilled with the return on the Upton trade when I first heard about it as well. I hadn't been in touch with my contact in a while (not surprising given the level of activity that has been going on since the WM) but he told me this morning that Chad MacDonald did indeed play a large role in identifying the talent from SD and is extremely high on Fried and Dustin Peterson as high-risk, high reward types, and firmly believes that Jace Peterson and Mallex Smith could be valuable bench pieces (if not turning into serviceable regulars). I don't think the plan was to bring in "another LaStella" but rather someone who could play around the IF like Prado could and still have good ABs which Jace fits the mold of. Dustin is a wildcard, no doubt, but Chad is very high on his power potential, he's "very coachable" and they think he will be able to square up the ball with more regularity and authority going forward. Fried, of course, is the jewel in the package and the Braves are apparently very high on him. I have no intel as to what else was offered at this time but hearing this made me feel a little bit better about the trade.

Are you sure he wasn't going Disney on us?

Certainly this team now has Whosits and Whatsits galore.

Well I chose flotsam and jetsam with some care. I'm glad to receive some commendation for it.

Steamer of course is entirely numbers driven. I'm hoping that Chad MacDonald's input will help us beat the odds on the prospects we got back. As I noted in another thread, players that didn't make the BA list for top 20 prospects for their league are pretty far out in fringe prospect territory given that the guys in the bottom half of those lists tend to be pretty fringy themselves.

Fried is a different animal. The comp that I keep coming back to is our own Arodys Vizcaino. Both highly rated prospects sidelined by TJ surgery at the time they were traded. Fried was #53 on the 2014 BA Top 100 list and Viz was #40 on the 2012 list. Their profiles were a bit different though. Viz was already projected much more as a reliever. And he had already reached the majors. Since we have Viz back now, I'd be happy if one of them reached their potential.

The two guys that I like better than the projections are Peraza (even if he skipped AAA, which I don't think would be a good idea) and Pastornicky.

I'm not a big Pastor fan since he has utility infielder offensive ability and can only play 2B at the big league level. With the the acquisitions of Jace and Callaspo, I think Pastor might be on the 40-man hot seat. I haven't seen Jace in the field yet, but it sounds like he's a better defender than Pastor from scouting reports.

With Jace logging time in hitter-friendly leagues last year, it's tough to compare him statistically to Pastor. I performed an admittedly low sample size experiment of comparing their offensive ranks within their leagues. 2014 was the only AAA stint for Jace. For Tyler, I used his 2013 AAA season (his 3rd in AAA) since the PA were comparable to Jace's 2014. I set the compare to a minimum of 250 PA. Here goes:

Jace Peterson 2014 Pacific Coast League Ranks
AVG: 27th out of 160 qualifiers
OBP: 9th out of 160 qualifiers
SLG: 47th out of 160 qualifiers

Tyler Pastornicky 2013 International League Ranks
AVG: 22nd out of 138 qualifiers
OBP: 39th out of 138 qualifiers
SLG: 71st out of 138 qualifiers
