Braves sign Jason Grilli

(C) is strategy that's been used quite successfully by the Cubs. I have liked what they've done. I hated seeing the guy go that we traded for Russell and Bonifacio.

This is not even remotely comparable to the masterwork the Cubs have executed. They sign/acquire young, high-risk/high-reward propositions and pawn them off when their value is at its precipice.

Front-loading is good in this situation. Feel better about this after seeing total $, low buyout, and front-loading.

For reference on setup men, Pat Neshek got 2 / $12.5 from the Astros.

@mlbbowman
Grilli will receive $4.25M in 2015 and $3.5M in 2016. He has a $3M option for 2017 ($250K buyout). Contract includes a $250K signing bonus

Wow...Dak coming with the good thoughts. LOL

The only way this move makes some sense to me is if we're trading a reliever. Further, I do wonder if we're looking ahead to selling off Kimbrel to the highest bidder. Though it might not come this off-season.

That said, Grilli is getting old and I am not sure how effective he'll be over the next two years. I'd expect him to continue to decline most likely.

I expect us to trade him at the deadline. Paying half his salary this year and him have a cheaper salary next year will make him attractive to contending teams.

This is kind of an odd signing for a team looking ahead to 2017. While he could be with us if we pick up the option, most likely he won't. And to give a 3 year, $8MM deal to a 38 year old isn't going to attract much attention at the deadline should we look to trade him. Further, we have several young guys that would make a lot more sense to start getting some experience.

Doesn't move the needle much, but still an odd signing, unless signing he and Johnson means trading Kimbrel.

For those saying that they hope this is a precursor to trading Kimbrel..

I don't see how this affects Kimbrel at all, it's not like Grilli is going to replace Kimbrel as the closer if he was (and he won't be) traded.

For the record, I do not "hope" to see Kimbrel traded nor am I looking forward to it. But I could see how it could make sense at some point given our direction and situation.

That said, I do hope to see Carpenter traded. :)

Of course you do

Didn't mean to come across as saying folks "want" him traded, should have said the way some think the club is going. So for that I apologize.

Kimbrel is signed thru 2018 at a very team friendly deal -see the recent signings of Robertson/Romo/Gregerson/Neshek- and will be under club control when we (front office) expect to be serious contenders.

Not if you approach it from a perspective that mentoring will be part of Grilli's responsibilities. He's a pro and some of his knowledge/experience could be helpful to the younger pitchers.

Like this move ALOT. He along with Johnson (if he returns to anything resembling previous form with Os) will garner a lot of attention in season near the trade deadline if we fall out of it.

If we don't, he'll be a great mentor for the young guys as well as reliable veterans that you don't have to be concerned about overusing down the stretch if we make it that far. And as we know that is a major concern with Fredi's bullpen management.

Folks, we haven't see anything out of Hart yet...believe it or not he is just getting started transforming the MLB team as well as replenishing the minors.

It's cool, I was just clarifying to make it clear. Keep in mind Kimbrel is among my favorite Braves so it was more for that reason than what you said. Further, I could see it going either way on Kimbrel as far as keeping or trading him at some point. And since he is the best of the best among closers I could see us trading him for a big return.

I dont know why people are bitching over this.

Its not a ton of money and we have plenty of money to use.

He can be flipped at the deadline or if we surprise, help make a push for a WC spot.
