Braves sign Jason Grilli

How is building your bullpen around the best closer in the league "dumb"???

Personally, I don't think we can say too strongly either way without having a better idea of what the team will look like in 2017. As we've seen this off-season, a lot of changes can happen very fast. Plus we have no idea what offers the Braves may be able to get for Kimbrel. I would trade pretty much anyone if the return was so big that it made sense.

I know and that was my point. You call out folks, often times in the very same thread, for doing the very same as yourself or at least very similar.

That is also why I find you so annoying. As they say: "No one likes a hypocrite."

Yet you say you ignore me :icwudt:

Why not just keep Walden?

Because apparently Heyward and Carpenter wouldn't get you Miller and Jenkins.

(How is it that no one understands that Walden (as the "throw-in") was included because Hart told them they could have their pick of guys in our pen not named Simmons or Shreve and he's the guy they chose?)

Walden had a sub-3 ERA.

He was hardly a throw-in, hes a great setup guy, why not keep him?

And i have doubts that Heyward alone isnt worth Miller and Jenkins.

I agree, but would have to be blown away big time!! Don't see what the point in trading him just because we may struggle for a year or two at the most.

Hopefully Johnson and Grilli means the end of Carpenter. Or Carp is the new Varvaro?

I would figure Carpenter is gone.

Johnson, Grilli, Kimbrel, Simmons, and Russell/Shreve, and Kohn/Viz/Avilan?

Since you have doubts and know something the rest of us don't, why wasn't the deal just Heyward for Miller and Jenkins then? Hart just sent them Walden for ****s and giggles???

The Cardinals may look at it like this: We know we need a setup guy to replace Neshek, and we would prefer one with closing experience in case Rosenthal continues to walk guys and his first half (of 2014) struggles repeat themselves. Walden would fit that to a tee.

I would advocate trading Kimbrel for pieces that will help the team in 2017 (that's apparently the direction). There's a chance Kimbrel is still the man in 2017, but with relief pitchers you never know.

I would think we could trade Kimbrel to a team that needs a closer that's a contender right now and take players that will help us later on instead of risking Kimbrel blowing his arm and/or losing effectiveness. Either of which is possible the next two years and unless you think we are contenders the next two years ( I don't) then I would trade him.

Keeping him is unnecessarily taking on risk. His value will never be higher than it is now and he's a waste on a 70 win team.

Ya think?!?!?

Hart is trying to see if he can sneak into the playoffs these next two years like the Royals did last season. Build a great pen and a strong rotation. The Royals were awful offensively and they got to the world series because they just got hot offensively at the right time. I would argue that our offense this year will be better than the Royals was last season or at least as good. And the pen and rotation could be just as good if Simmons is ready to go.

I'm telling you don't give up on this team the next couple of years.

The Cardinals would have to be stupid to prefer Carpenter to Walden and we both know they're not.

What is it with you and your smart a$$ comments??

Sarcasm gets lost sometimes...the point was that's exactly what I'd expect the case was.

The point was that obviously Heyward wasn't enough for Miller and Jenkins in Mozeliak's eyes or else Hart wouldn't have agreed to include Walden - it was Heyward (poster) that clearly doesn't get that, not you.

If i could tell you, i would.
