Braves sign Jason Grilli

Then what do you do with the magical money? Find another reliever in his late 30s? Sign a "veteran 5th starter type" when Hale could do the job for way less?

If you're going to spend it, spend it on a real NEED.

I'd make a splash on the international stage. This team can completely change the way they are viewed with the fanbase if they go all out on Moncada.

I think we'll make a push for Moncada but i doubt we'll be the highest bidder with teams like NYY/Phi/LA, etc all going for him as well.

The veteran leadership angle is the one that makes the most sense in justifying the Grilli signing.

We're paying a guaranteed 8M over two years for a projected 1 win over the two-year period. That's not good bang for the buck. Especially considering we have similar alternatives who are much cheaper: Varvaro (before release), Hale, Shreve, Jaime, Viz, Kohn, Harper etc etc.

But a veteran like Grilli could be a positive influence on the young pups and justify his salary in ways not apparent in his individual statistical line. Ditto Jim Johnson.

When you look at the money going out to relievers this is not a bad deal. He's got closer experience and has always been known as a positive clubhouse guy. He got straightened out after going to the Angels and could be a very solid set up man for us. Jim Johnson is guaranteed little money and is no guarantee to make the roster. A proven veteran set up man is a good thing. It's also very likely that he'll be traded at the deadline if we're out of it. We have money to spend short term so why not?

We do have money for 2015 going off what Hart and McGwirk have said. But what is the best use for it. I would pay forward some od Melvin's 2017 salary. But that might conflict with the goal of having a palatable 2015 team.
