If the Cards Extent Heyward for...

Maybe...maybe not. Ultimately the Braves will be more competitive past 2015 than they would have been if they rode out 2015 for one fruit less run.

Isn't that a bit of a strawman. Who here is claiming this is a 96 win team or the 1927 Yankees. It seems to me that you don't have to be quite that good to be a contending team.

I think that was aimed at me. I certainly wasn't claiming this was a 96-win team, but rather that Wren & friends sold the core on that idea and got the discount you mentioned from them. Good business move, sure, but not something (when combined with where we are a year later and how they answered the loyalty of those players) I would put under the Braves Way.

But last year an example of reality smacking them in the mouth and causing a shift in the plan.

And the Braves I thought I knew would've worked toward giving the players what they promised instead of trapping them into several losing seasons or using the hometown discount as a trading point.

I dont think the Braves believe they will have several losing seasons.

And do you think the Braves believed they had something very close to a 96-win team when they signed the core?

That's an interesting question. Maybe in the immediate short term probably but the long term concern for the health of the organization was always there.

Then you really have to question the contracts they handed out, don't you think? Who locks up a core with long term concerns? And if they made that kind of misjudgment, isn't it more likely that they are repeating that misjudgment during this Mukaki Rebuild? Markakis. Grilli. Big money on players who either won't contribute to the magical 2017 or who will possibly be a burden on that team. Either go for it or don't. Either rebuild or don't. You can't jump around and act indecisively. That results in getting less value for your big players like Upton and hindering your rebuild with players like Markakis.

I'm pretty sure Hart consults the I Ching before every move. That's why we have trouble understanding his moves.

The above link shows the answer I got when I queried the I Ching about the wisdom of the Mukaki rebuild.

So, we're going to sign Bruce Chen?

And, apparently, he's going to be a gascan in the bullpen?

The sixth line, divided, shows one who may be compared to the ram butting against the fence, and unable either to retreat, or to advance as he would fain do.

Nailed it.

Why wouldn't you lock up a core of young players if they are willing to take a slight discount? That is the smartest way to build a club IMO.

Also, how does Markakis hinder the rebuild? These other guys are short term lottery tickets that you hope to cash in. Baseball isn't like other sports. Tanking doesn't really guarantee anything.
