Braves trade Shreve and Carpenter for Manny Banuelos

I'll admit I know nothing about this guy. But it sounds like we think he has a shot of being of 5th starter THIS year. If not we think he's close. He's a former top guy who the scouts obviously feel have a shot of getting back there.

If we get a decent, cheap, controllable starter for any two RP not named Kimbrell or Rivera, then GREAT. Shreve had some good stuff but we can replace that in a minute.

If the SP busts or is bad, then we lose. But it seems like a reasonable gamble.

Hate losing Shreve, but his 2017 contribution can be replaced with relative ease. Carpenter never was going to be a factor for the 2017 team. There's risk involved and the Yankees got a good deal, but I like the trade overall. I will say that it is sad that Shreve and Carpenter bagged a better prospect than Justin and Northcraft. Fried is close, but I think Ban has the edge.

My feelings exactly. I do like Banuelos' potential A LOT -- he was a bona-fide top prospect just a few years ago. This is exactly the type of guy the Braves should be going after over the next two seasons.

Same here. I liked Shreve but this was a good trade assuming Banuelos is healthy.

I don't mind this. I think it's a little bit of an overpay because of the risk involved with Banuelos. BUT we've essentially added Grilli, Vizcaino, and Jim Johnson to replace Carp and Walden. Losing Shreve hurts but I think it's a good gamble to take. Banuelos was one of the best pitching prospects in baseball and is now 2 years removed from tommy john. He's apparently going to compete in ST for the 5th spot and he has significant upside. Just a risk with the injury risk. I think it's a solid gamble

It's risky no doubt. But there's also a chance we just got our 5th starter this year with upside.

Yeah, after giving it more thought these are definitely the type of moves that the Braves need to be making. Relievers are a dime a dozen and vary from year to year. If you have a chance to get a high upside arm for just relievers then you have to do it. Smart move.

I would argue that, whether you'd favor ManBan over Fried or Fried over ManBan, that this return for Shreve and Carpenter shows how much we misread things and misplayed the Justin Upton trade. Further, Hart himself pretty much said they did just that too according to a piece by Jeff Schultz of the AJC after the deal.

For God's sake can we please now turn our attention to getting offense?

The focus, as it should be, is accumulating assets. The organization was in dire straights because of the lack of real talent on the farm system to replenish the major league club. Whether they are starters, relievers, defensive players, or hitters the Braves need to get those guys. Then you trade from surpluses to address needs.

The Upton trade was more than just Fried.

Trading two Major League relievers was a prime opportunity to acquire a bat. At least this guy has some potential.

The more I think about this the more I love it. There's no doubt Banuelos comes with a good amount of risk but the upside and talent are clear. We're building for the future and traded two replaceable bullpen arms for the chance and an above average MLB SP. He was one of the elite front line SP prospects around. If he can just become a 3 long term this is a great deal.

#Yankees have bit of secret weapon: Heard McCann gave strong endorsement to Carpenter, who he caught a lot with #Braves

Most likely scenario is this guy gets a shot at 5th starter. Braves play it conservative and send him down. And look to bring him up later in the year. Use Hale or a 1 yr vet in the interim.

From a trade fantasy point of view this really puts us in a better space to trade Minor. Minor could have a great early season and build value up. Then at deadline or end of the year you have a good SP with some control.

You'd have Jenkins, Sims, and Banuelos as options who could be ready second half of the year to 2016.

Point being that maybe Minor gets us some offense????
