Is all this Braves' rebuilding really necessary?

Everyone is assuring me that we couldn't afford to keep either of our hitters and yet we somehow are going to be able to afford replacements of equal or better value

More consistent than Heyward in terms of overall production year to year.

Heyward will be paid primarily for his potential upside, defense, and baserunning. All of those diminish quickly after 30. No thank you.

Offensive production, sure. Yes Heyward is a complete player and will be paid for those. He will also be 25 in 2016 so worrying about what he does have 30 is pointless to me as he won't be signed for many of those years.

I think the Braves will pony up for someone who can consistently hit a baseball. I would have extended Upton. I would hope they attempted to do so.

Well, Justin has stated that he wants an extension done with the Padres before ST, so he was obviously willing to listen. Unfortunately, this organization likes making assumptions now.

Consider also that the production of Gattis, Upton and Heyward in 2014 was very high relative to salaries and ditto for expected production relative to salaries in 2015.

I really don't understand this either or situation people seem to think we were in. We could have been competitive in 2015 and still been competitive in 2017.

Its possible. Or we could have went into a downward spiral that would have taken 5 years to rebuild and then all of the guys who are signed now walk out the door.

I think that's going to be the case anyways.

I understand your view on that. We just aren't going to agree on it.

I believe in the organizations ability to now consistently produce a steady pipeline of players. They've developed hitters in the past and they will do it again. Its basically a given that we will have plenty of pitching.

Wait, you've always believed that. You are putting on the anti-Wren glasses, but up until he was fired, it was the Braves are great at developing prospects, you have to trust them thing.

I agree... we will develop some good talent over the next 5 years that might have us ready to compete again in 2020. Coupled with 3 or four years of top 10 draft picks, we should be able to right the ship within the next decade.

We will develop plenty of talent each year for the next 5 years as a result of the trades that were made. Then we will supplement the pieces already on the major league team while still having the flexibility to fill holes via FA with short term pieces while the farm does its thing.

Right... so 5 years we might be really good again. If these injured pitchers pan out

We will be in playoff contention at worst in two years while at the same time having an incredibly strong farm system.

There is more than one way to skin a cat. There is more ways to have an effective offense as opposed to having "names".

How many offensive players will we have to acquire in the next two years to be in playoff contention, in your opinion?

What type of improvement are you eexpecting from Bethancourt?

Hopefully becoming a 310-320 OBP guy. Even with that being awful thats a huge help from being out 75% of the time.

With those modest improvements (as GF said with Simmons) I think the Braves will need to bring 1-2 above average offensive guys (I'd look for low strikeout high OBP guys). I think Peraza is an absolute major leaguer and I think we will get one more out of the current grouping of players. I like Petersons statistical profile but dont know enough about him to consider him a sure thing.

Braves will have to fill CF/LF/2B/3B. The kid we got from Houston is a very highly regarded prospect to the point I think we could say there is a 50% chance he makes it. So you are looking at CF/LF/2B. I think those can be filled by 2017 considering Peraza is most likely the future at 2B.

Again, with the pitching that is being assembled we don't need a powerful offense. We need an offense that can work a pitcher and not flail away.
