Jason Heyward Open to Extension w/ Cardinals

Maybe because his agent didn't communicate to him that the Braves were interested? Or perhaps he takes their interest in extending him at something in between what Freeman got and Casey's dream scenario was akin to non-interest? I've already told you the rules require a team to only request the presence of a player during contract negotiations once - and clearly they never got even close to agreeable terms.

Believe what you want and I will believe what I want. Just stop with the melodrama.

Can you not see how dumb this sounds? His agent didn't tell him? really? Come the **** on

ok, why would Heyward play the "they didn't talk to me" game if they had serious discussions with his agent?

Because playing with words allows you to be right in this situation? Again, I believe both sides are telling truths and lies.

You don't see how thats possible?

His agent gets a percentage of his contract. If hte Braves didn't want to offer close to the demands maybe Close didn't want to risk Heyward getting emotional towards the team and say work it out.

Its unlikely but lets not act like its impossible. The agent has a major incentive to get the highest dollar deal.

I'm a partner in an AmLaw 100 firm. I routinely find agents (or lawyers) not communicating with the clients- happens every day. Ethics rules require you to communicate a bona fide offer in writing as part of your fiduciary duty - nothing more. The Braves never technically submitted an offer in accordance with the rule book- hence nothing is required to be communicated.

Casey didn't even want to discuss an extension the winter of 2013. And in 2014 it was clear it was either FA money or nada. Again believe what you want but I would ask you refrain from ad hominem attacks.

Why does Heyward need to be right?

Heyward was traded to the Cards. He doesn't have to say anything about the Braves or the contract negotiations. He loses nothing by saying he wasn't to leave Atlanta.

That agent would lose his license as well.

No he wouldn't lose his license because he would not be running afoul of his fiduciary obligations. If he failed to communicate the terms of a written offer or otherwise lied to his principal, then he would risk losing same.

I don't know what Jason knows or doesn't know. I do know they met with Casey and got no where. Infer from that whatever you want but let's stop the melodrama.

For the same reason the Braves need to be. So that they don't look bad to the fans. Sports players are more protective of their brand than ever before. Heywards earning potential is not only shaped by his play on the field but his marketability to baseball fans.

It's intriguing to me that Jason continues to be as open about the Atlanta 'negotiations' as he has been. He seems to be carrying a little chip on his shoulder.

For those that care enough to find out, why not contact Derrick Goold (or another StL Post sports scribe), explain the circumstances and information that has been presented, and ask that it be posited to Heyward directly? It's not an unreasonable or especially intrusive question.

I definitely think he wanted to stay but not at the price the Braves felt he was worth.

If an agent didn't rely to his client a verbal offer given by a team, he wouldn't be an agent very long even if the offer needed to be in writing. That agent would be acting immoral, if not illegal; and would not be acting in the best interests of his client. Any agents number 1 priority. How would Casey stay in the business for 23 years if he wasn't relaying offers to his clients? Close negotiated extensions with Kershaw, Jeter, Bailey, and Freeman but decided to be secretive about offers with Jason Heyward?

"He has better ethics than most,'' Greinke says. "I don't think he's slimy like a lot of guys are. There are other very good agents out there, but they are very slimy. "He may not get every last penny, but he's not going to get in a situation where you get screwed, or get put in a bad situation or bad contract.''

So free agents lose earning potential when they change teams?

Again I don't know what Casey told Jason or not. He could have said the Braves want to talk but on unreasonable terms based on their side's valuation of Jason approaching FA. That's conjecture on my part to be fair- again I have no idea what he may or may not have said to Jason. I believe what I was told but you are free to believe what you want. I do know the ethics rules, however.

Do you believe what you were told makes sense based on everything that has come out? You have your source and I'm sure they have been good to you and usually right on but things are leaked for a reason, they aren't always accurate.

What free agents have lost earning potential by not re-signing with the Braves?

How would I have any way of quantifying that?

The fact of the matter is that players want as many fans as possible. Heyward could be saying these things to ensure he does not lose any of the Brave fans that he had. Its clearly working based on the fact that everything he says about the matter is constantly posted on this forum.

What has come out? Jason Heywards words? Not saying he is lying at all but how are his words any different or more reliable than the words ramadon heard?
