Jason Heyward Open to Extension w/ Cardinals

So you don't have a fan favorite going on record saying the team didn't value him enough to pick up the phone to talk about staying?

Would I believe that the Braves had a realistic interest in keeping him by offering him a contract that was well below market value? That type of sentiment only works on sentimental types. Its easy to see through. I'm glad the Braves were honest enough to not offer a fake deal to placate to the fanbase. We aren't children. Braves could not afford to pay what Heyward is worth on the open market and didn't believe he was worth it to boot.

Why offer a contract that you have every reason to believe will be rejected? What does that accomplish?

Because you have no idea what's going to happen, are you unaware of how negotiations work? Just because an agent or player says one thing, doesn't mean they are going to get that.

Everyone said Trout was going to get 30 mil a year, he signed for 24. Ervin wanted a huge deal, had to take a 1 year deal from us, Stephen Drew, JD Drew, James Shields currently, there's a hundred cases of players asking for X and having to settle for Y.

Does Jason Heyward play for the Braves?

Is he even a potential target when he becomes a free-agent?

Then who gives a ****?!?!?

I'm actually stunned that people think like this.

There is ZERO downside to making an offer. ZERO.

Trout got 33M in his FA years.
Ervin got his deal the next year while being paid nicely by the Braves
Those are other guys don't come close to the value Heyward has by baseball.

Awful examples.

There is also no chance he signs it. It becomes a fake offer and an insult to the fanbase.

You have no idea what he will do. Unless you are Jason Heyward, which I assume you are not.

Seriously, tell me the down side to making an actual offer, I'd love to hear it.

Unless you plan on offering him 10 M a year? How the **** do you know he won't sign it? They never even talked!

You think what they did instead was NOT insulting to the fanbase? Our "GM" said he "assumed" Heyward wouldn't be interested. What a joke. Our team deserves to suck for years for this incompetence.

When Heyward gets 26-28 M this offseason do you think an offer of 20M is a valid offer?

You should just not root for a mid market team then. If you think the Braves could pay 26-28M on a player who is still a lot of potential and still fill all their holes left by a barren farm system then I'm not sure what to say.

I'll believe what has been said on here. Heywards designated agent was spoken to who is an extension of Heyward. Now, the lack of follow up could definitely be construed as dropping the ball but if the value gap was so high, as has been indicated, then I could understand why the Braves felt it was time to move on.

It's better than no offer. Especially when he still has to stay healthy and perform to get that extra $6-8M.

I can't believe how dumb some of you are - actually defending not even speaking to the guy to at least see if he is interested

I can root for a mid-market team all I want as long as they're smart. The Braves clearly are not. Hart is a joke.

And yet you have not seen the results on the field in terms of W-L for the next 3 years.

I'll refrain from judgement until he is given a fair shake and not because he traded my favorite player!!!

Really, because that just seems like a huge fake offer to me. I guess we see things differently.

Yes.

1- You have no idea if he's getting 26-28 mil per year from anyone
2- He has said over and over he loves ATL, grew up here, etc....how do you know he won't take 6 mil less per year?
3- Your per year value of him would make him, I believe, the 3rd or 4th highest paid player in baseball......that's not happening.

You never know until you try.

I don't get why its in Heywards best interest to accept a contract below market value the year before FA when mlb revenues are exploding.

The real mistake was not extending him after his first or second year.

Trading a player doesn't bother me as much as how he was traded. The fact that he had no clue whether Heyward would provide a discount, wanted to stay, etc, is insulting to the fanbase.

I know no matter what happens you will blow the organization so no point in arguing with you.

GO Braves! Can't wait to watch Max Fried pitch this year!!!
