Stocks

Anybody here active investors?

I've really stepped up my interest in the last 12 months. Finally have a portfolio I like. Curious if anyone here does anything beyond the standard 401K/mutual fund stuff.

I just have my 401k. I've decided to invest in real estate as I think thats the better long term play. It will start very slow for me but eventually 1 house turns to 2 and so on.

We have a lot in stocks. We don't touch it, it is our nest egg and it has made a lot of money. It will be part of retirement along with our 401k's.

I invest for fun, primarily. Aside from a Roth IRA and some fixed income bonds, enjoy gambling on stocks when companies/corporations I like are performing poorly and I can garner significant shares for a comparatively low buy-in. My portfolio is small, yet diverse.

Current prizes: TEPCO, Sirius XM, American Apparel, YUM Brands, T-Mobile, JetBlue, Yahoo, Fannie Mae, Blue Star Airlines (wink, wink).

Failures: Every Chinese tech company I've ever owned, every Marijuana related venture I've ever speculated on, Alcatel, Nokia, RIM, Barclays ... and that list goes on for a while.

I've got some bad losses myself. I currently own Gilead, Delta Airlines, Beoing, Conoco Phillips, Prospect Capitol, SunEdison, Citi Bank, and a couple gold stocks and ETFs.

My best hit was a bio-tech and my worst was a sea oil drilling company

Stocks are cool.

But I always preferred the Ducking Stool.

I am stock market virgin. Putting my life on the line in those unnecessary wars and making a good chunk of change in the process, I wasn't exactly smart with my money. Currently planning for a wedding in May and really can't afford to be gambling with any money.

I invested heavily in a Chinese Internet company; Baidu. Bought it years 5 years back, it split like 7-1 or something (can't remember). I truly believe that companies in China cook thier books due to thier government so I sold it all for like $80 a pop. Thing is in $217 now. So I lost a lot of money. It Depresses me to even think about it

My big bets are: Apple, Disney and Yum.

I went against my wife wishes on Apple, boy no snatch for a long time for that boneheaded move. She still reminds me of it today.

It was lilke $50 about a year ago... I can't believe I didn't buy it then.

I think there's still money to be made there: The ibm-apple deal, apple watch, 12 inch iPad, future of apple pay etc. I don't have enough money to purchase enough now but theres still solid upside.

I don't disagree. But I'm looking elsewhere for a bit more upside since I'm still young and can take on more upside.

Apple has a clear goal of being a steady growth stock. It wants to disassociate from the traditional tech stock of being volatile.

Heavily invested in Disney.

Have Roth IRA, some real estate. I just play with stocks though. Just buy when I got a little bit of change I want to play with and then just hold it forever.
