Braves sign RHP Todd Coffey to Minor League Deal

Not ground-breaking news here, but.

#Braves have added a few relievers on minor-league deals. If those guys perform well, wouldn't be surprised to see them flipped at deadline.

A number of us considered the Harang signing last year a desperate move, but it also didn't cost us a lot of money unlike the Santana signing. There are different degrees of desperation IMO. Further, I wouldn't expect a rebuilding team like us to make a big desperation move a la the Santana signing last year. That is what teams that expect to win and challenge for a division do.

Yeah. I actually liked the Harang signing if for no other reason than it eliminated Garcia. When you're just "throwing as much **** against a wall and hoping it sticks" because you lost a major piece? That'll create a feeling of desperation around those moves.

Teams sign guys to minor league deals all. the. time. I just posted a thing where the Nats signed Bell and 11 (ELEVEN) others to minor league deals. That's not "desperate." That's making sure you're covered provided the worst happens. The moves don't really affect anything. At all. You can say they feel desperate. And 12 year olds say they feel "in love." Doesn't make it true.

This organization went through an unprecedented run at winning while still continually churning out incredible farm systems. They just overhauled the orgnaization with talent from recent trades as well as international signings. They hvae two top 30 picks in the next draft.

Maybe its a bit of arrogance but they don't feel the need to 100% throw away this season in order to ensure the future is bright after all the moves that have been made. Maybe they are crazy.

I understand I'm a bit of an optimist (understatement of the century there) but I think the team can be competitive all year long and baseball is a funny game. Sometimes crazy things happen. If the Braves are in a the wild card hunt until early to mid September then thats a wildly successful year and really can energize the fanbase moving forward assuming growth in the farm.

There's more than one way to skin a cat. I too believe this team can compete this year -- not because of guys like Jonny Gomes and Eric Stults, but because the Braves have a rock solid core. In my mind, given that the team has replenished its farm system via trade and isn't actively seeking contention in 2015, the invites should be young, controllable, high-upside talents that could also potentially be hot-swapped for prospects or even utilized well into the future. What I've seen in the past month or so, in terms of invites and Minor league deals, is more akin to negligibly patching holes than it is any sort of grand positioning for 2016 and beyond.

(not including trades or claims)

Washington has signed 2 players this month. Atlanta has signed 8.

Washington signed 9 in January. Atlanta signed 12.

Washington signed 13 in December. Atlanta signed 10.

Washington signed 3 in November. Atlanta signed 19.

So, if you think NUMBERS are the decided factor on desperation (even though they only play a role), Atlanta has Washington beat 49 to 27. But, again, that's not the whole point.

One thing is for sure, outside of Kimbrel this will be an almost totally redone bullpen. Now gone from last season includes Walden (traded), Simmons (lost to TJS), Hale (traded), Varvaro (traded), Carpenter (traded) and Shreve (traded). The replacements include Grilli, Johnson, Outman along with Veras, Viz and Kohn as other possible replacements. Plus others on our 40-man roster could make the team with a strong ST too.

I think the Braves will get at least one interesting prospect at the deadline from the guys they signed right now. Who knows, they could even get lucky in that 2 or 3 of the guys they signed have productive years and maybe one team gets desperate. I think its a good position to be in.

Yes. Perhaps we could bring back Kyle Farnsworth. Or Antonio Alfonseca. Oh, how I miss the Octopus.
