GDT: Braves @ Phillies (July 7, 2013, SERIOUSLY)

Did anyone just watch that at bat by Marte for the Pirates? Kevin Greg had him in a hole and Marte kept fouling off pitch after pitch and the ONLY strike he threw him in 8 pitches Marte hit it out. That was a great at bat.

Didn't see it but Marte doesn't have good plate discipline. Good for him that he was able to stay alive and hit a mistake but I still would prefer my hitters to swing at strikes as opposed to balls, even with two strikes. I'm sure there are examples that can be used for both sides of this argument. We'll just agree to disagree.

Oh, and the Nats are down to just four games out now. Had a chance to create some real distance, but no the Marlins and Phillies are just too hard to beat.

The Nationals were very fortunate to be playing the Padres who have now lost 9 in a row. Although I do realize those same Padres swept the Braves. Look its not time to panic yet, but the Braves far from have anything wrapped up and they need to play much more consistent if they want to hang on to their lead.

Yes, but it doesn't matter who the Nats are playing. If this team doesn't start learning how to win on the road, that lead will disappear very quickly. Not even concerned about the playoffs right now.

That is kind of what I said in the second part of my post. The Braves need to play more consistent baseball. The fact they are only one game over .500 since starting the season at 12-1 is very troubling, they need to go on a run, but I just don't know how capable they are of that with their inconsistent offense and at times inconsistent pitching.

starting pitching has been the biggest problem lately, hitting has picked up some . We're getting guys on, leaving them on too much but at least we're hitting. A few weeks ago if you told me McCann and Uggla would heat up I'd think we'd go on a run, but we haven't.

They are getting plenty of hits, however, part of the inconsistency is they're not able to get those guys in. Like today, they had tons of chances to score many more runs and just squandered the opportunties, a bit more consistency on both sides of the aisle would help greatly. And yeah, they have to play better on the road.

everyone said all along "the strikeouts are ok, we hit homers, we can still be successful" etc (and I was one of them).
I think we see why they are very worrisome. When you don't make contact, it's harder to get those "lucky" hits like seeing-eye singles and bloopers. When you walk instead of single or ground-out with a men on 2nd and 3rd, no runs score and guys remain stranded. there is something to be said for making contact. and as much as statheads won't say it, AVG and RBI are connected and important. why does freddie lead us in RBI? because he gets hits and not just walks.

I doubt we lose our lead in a week, but I can't see this team being ahead of Washington by the trade deadline.

Kind of ironic that the only quality start during the Phillies series came from the guy rumored on the block.
Baseball is a funny game.

Question -- why was BJ thrown? Radio guys said replay showed called strike 3 was in fact a strike -- was there a questionable call earlier in the count?

BJ's swing looks like a giraffe falling down a mountain

I think he was frustrated with the strike 3 call (which did appear to be a strike). He pissed at Eddings, Eddings pissed back at him, and I think he just let it get the better of him. Dude lost his temper, for sure. Medlen tried to keep him from going back at Eddings and BJ pushed his arm away.

Do you suggest changes in management? some posters worship FG and his hitting instructors, you might upset them.

I don't know what needs to be done if anything. I don't actively support Fredi and his decisions, but he has won a lot more than he has lost since he took over. Obviously regular season records mean nothing when you can't win in the postseason. At this point I firmly believe it all starts at the top. Matt touched on it earlier and it's been discussed ad nauseam already, but Wren's construction of the team mainly offensively is extremely flawed. It's not a failure, but this team should have a comfortable lead over Washington considering they have cruised through three months of the season.

This is team should win about the same amount of games as it did last year. That means it is inevitably a low 90 to high 90 win team, likely falling somewhere in the middle. Washington is around the same, and if they happened to finish with more than us, then a tip of the cap to them.

I think we are forgetting that we are also pretty banged up at the moment. The Break will be a good chance to get everyone healthy. Our bench has been a HUGE reason why we have won so many games thus far. Getting Schafer and Gattis back will help out tremendously in the 2nd half. And we pretty much know J-Up is going to turn it on again at some point and hit like he did in April. We'll go on another run. You watch and see.

If Washington continues to get a pass by us and by everyone else bc of injuries, so should we.

Gattis will return, as will Beachy and Schafer. Im not ready to give up the division yet just bc weve lost a few and Washington swept a team thats lost 9 in a row.
