Spring Training 2015

I mean, objectively, does it matter very much? Not really, no. It's just a month or two, and Perez is almost certainly not very good.

But it would say something very discouraging to me about the organization's values and priorities during this rebuilding (or retrenching or remodeling or re-carpeting or whatever the hell they insist on calling it). We know exactly what Eric Young Jr is. Not an ounce of mystery there. And we know that what he is isn't much. Perez has a small chance of being meaningfully better than that. We should be betting on that small chance.

I agree totally with your overall point, but I wouldn't say Perez is "almost certainly not very good" because the sample size just isn't enough (and his minor league numbers are quite good overall). However, I did note like dak that Perez has a pretty sizeable platoon split so it might be he's best in a platoon role in the long-term. Whatever the case, I think Perez being a natural CFer with a good minor league track record and only a small sample of MLB AB's is the one that you go with between him and someone like EY Jr who is more a corner outfielder (and likely below average in CF). Plus I am just not as high on EY Jr as some are because his numbers outside of very good left field defense have been pretty bad for some time now. I see EY Jr more of a 4th/5th outfielder but not a regular starter or leadoff man on a good team. I know we are not considered a good team, but if the goal is to try to be then you go with the potential here and not the known that isn't very good.

:happy0157: Yep, we're brutal alright but that doesn't make it any less true. :)

Speaking of Upton, the new Inside Edge fielding makes his defense in CF seem even worse than DRS and others suggest. For example, Inside Edge has Upton making only 50% of plays considered likely to be made by other defenders in CF. He was just as bad on even plays too. In other words, Upton according to Inside Edge was pretty terrible in CF last year for Atlanta (and he had similar numbers his first season here also). And this is only talking about Upton on defense of course.
I don't do the analytics and advanced stats, but even I know he's terrible at baseball.

I am not sold on Inside Edge and some other advanced stats myself, some IMO are just too new and not vetted yet. But I do find these stats helpful when used properly and especially telling when they pretty much all agree like they do in Upton's case.

I had no idea Wang was a Brave... shows you how much i paid attention.

Hart said some of those they signed early on that they'd not signed had he knew they'd been able to sign others. I would guess Wang is among those signings Hart had in mind since almost no one is giving him much of a shot at making the team.

DOB doesn't handle disagreement very well, this time he's really going at it on twitter with fans that don't think as highly as him about Jordan Schafer. There is like six straight tweets from DOB about that topic.

:happy0157: One fan posted in response to DOB's Schafer rant Celine Dion My Heart Will Go On:

@Telfo1: @DOBrienAJC DAMMIT DOB SCHAFER'S AWFUL TIME TO LET HIM GO YOUR HEART WILL GO ON”

What about Almonte for CF?

He was named among the options but he profiles more as a corner outfielder. He played some centerfield in the minors but apparently he wasn't good there. However, he wasn't so bad there that he cannot play it at all.

The #Braves continue to hint Banuelos could start the year in the pen and then end the year as a starter. Could be w/ ATL or Gwinnett.

@mlbbowman
This would be a way to limit Banuelos' workload as he'll likely be limited to 120-130 IP this year. He threw 76.1 last year.

Some good news from Bowman . . . Callaspo lost 3 pounds! I also like what he has to say about Young not necessarily being the favorite for CF.

"Though Callaspo's most recent mandated weigh-in showed that he has lost three pounds since reporting to camp overweight last week, the Braves do not seem to be inclined to give him a roster spot simply because he signed a one-year, $3 million deal in December. Thus, Callaspo, Peterson and Gosselin are all battling to be the club's starting second baseman."

. . .

"Young will serve as the starting center fielder in Wednesday's game. But this might not be an indication that he is the favorite to win that spot as much as it is a reminder that of the three candidates, he is the one who must prove he is capable of handling the position from a defensive perspective."

I'm glad they've come to their senses / started to be forthright about Banuelos. Never made sense for him to be considered a 5th starter candidate.

Personally, I don't see him nor Folty as real candidates despite what they say. Folty clearly isn't ready to start in the big leagues, while Banuelos is still trying to get back to his former self after missing so much time due to injury.

Sounds familiar. He made a major mistake showing up out of shape.

While many are still unhappy about it, this season's going to be one of the most fun to watch in a LONG TIME. Lots of hungry, young players that are going to give full effort on every play and AB and with every pitch. Opportunities are actually going to mean something, and nothing's promised to anyone not named Freeman, Kimbrel, Simmons, Teheran, Wood, or Minor.

Regardless of what the eventual results are, there will be some of that fire that's been needed around here for several years.

Here's the line-up our first ST game vs the Mets at 1:05 PM as posted by DOB via twitter:

@DOBrienAJC
#Braves lineup
KY Jr, CF
Jace Peterson SS
Freeman 1B
Gomes DH
Pierzysnki C
CJohnson 3B
Callaspo 2B
Almonte LF
Cedric Hunter CF
(WandyR LH)

Note: I am not sure who is actually playing CF and RF as someone named KY Jr (any relation to EY Jr.?) and Cedric Hunter are both said to be in CF today. Maybe they'll take turns playing there. :)

PS: DOB corrected the KY mistake to EY and added "No, the Braves didn't get Kevin Young. (Hey, it's early)", but it seems we still have EY Jr. and Cedric Hunter in CF.

Peterson at SS?

Yes - we will get to lose with fire!!!

That is actually no surprise given the fact Simmons is out and that Peterson came up a shortstop. He played mostly short throughout the minors (including more games there than at second or third last year) before playing second and third in the Majors.

First ST game and there are 1.5 legit MLB players in the lineup (Gomes is 0.5 because he is half of a platoon).

Ouch...

I don't think many folks on this board are able to fully grasp just how poor this team is going to be.
