Spring Training 2015

It seems Jordan Schafer is missed now that Melvin's hurt according to DOB. He responded agreeing with a fan on twitter that said the Braves wish they still had him given their current options to replace Melvin, lol. I guess Schafer is a stud now that he's hit a little with the Twins (nevermind his overall numbers and career track record). :)

i think Eury Perez COULD hit just as well in a short time as Schafer.

Better hope Shanks isn't on here. He might ask me to ban you.

Looks like they'll have the rotation stacked for Teheran to be the OD starter and for Wandy / Stults / Wang to compete for the 5th spot. Folty is on the outside looking in. No complaints here.

@mlbbowman
Wandy Rodriguez and Chien-Ming Wang will both pitch two innings on Wednesday against the Mets. #Braves

@mlbbowman
Julio Teheran and Eric Stults will get the two-inning stints on Thursday in Lakeland. #Braves

DOB continued his Schafer praise by comparing Perez and his situation to him in his piece on our CF options. DOB said: "now we’ll get to see Eury Perez a lot this spring and find out if the speedy center fielder was a great pickup, after posting a high average and OBP in Triple-A with the Nats but slipping through the cracks with them and Yankees because they had studs or at least guys with big contracts in the outfield and Perez was the victim of a numbers game (even if he might have been better than an outfielder or two that was kept by those teams; if that sounds like Jordan Schafer with the Braves, well, it probably should)."

Also, DOB said of Perez: "The Braves signed him to a major league contract about five weeks ago, and that move was one of those under-the-radar moves that we said at the time might pay big dividends down the road." But that isn't true, we actually picked up Perez via waiver claim after the Yankee's DFA'd him to make room for a newly signed player on their 40-man roster. I think DOB is confusing Perez with another former Yankee in Almonte here because Almonte did get a Major league deal unlike Perez.

Wandy will be facing Gee apparently as MLB.com has him starting for the Mets.

DOB says Young has been really impressive and might be the favorite for the CF job.

:facepalm:

That is getting way ahead of ourselves given the fact that we haven't even played one ST game yet. I don't put much stock in so called favorites this early outside of saying a natural CFer like Perez is a favorite since the others (including Young) are more corner outfielders.

I kinda love that our first big board war of the spring might be over who gets a month's worth of CF starts--EY Jr or Eury Perez. It would be like, I dunno, betting real money on a schoolyard fight, or getting really emotionally invested in a World Cup qualifier between two countries you've never heard of. Fun, but ultimately pointless.

That said, Eury all the way!

You can put anything out in center field and at the plate and it would be better than the injured guy. I am so happy.

Definitely pulling for Eury. He has a pretty sizable platoon split, but would still stand a good chance of posting a better OBP than EY Jr versus RHP. My recollection of watching EY Jr play is that he doesn't have the arm to play CF.

EY Jr is starting to feel like a lock to make the team though. I'm hoping it's as the 5th OF and we get a chance to see what Zoilo and Eury can do.

I mean, objectively, does it matter very much? Not really, no. It's just a month or two, and Perez is almost certainly not very good.

But it would say something very discouraging to me about the organization's values and priorities during this rebuilding (or retrenching or remodeling or re-carpeting or whatever the hell they insist on calling it). We know exactly what Eric Young Jr is. Not an ounce of mystery there. And we know that what he is isn't much. Perez has a small chance of being meaningfully better than that. We should be betting on that small chance.

Exactly this. In this instance and every other.

:happy0157: Yep, we're brutal alright but that doesn't make it any less true. :)

Speaking of Upton, the new Inside Edge fielding makes his defense in CF seem even worse than DRS and others suggest. For example, Inside Edge has Upton making only 50% of plays considered likely to be made by other defenders in CF. He was just as bad on even plays too. In other words, Upton according to Inside Edge was pretty terrible in CF last year for Atlanta (and he had similar numbers his first season here also). And this is only talking about Upton on defense of course.
