Spring Training 2015

I think the idea is to get some experience for these prospects in 2015 and 2016 to see what we have for 2017. Once the team can accurately identify the weaknesses of that 2017 team, they can move to correct them. Early results point to offense being a huge problem, but it's really too early to start thinking about 2017 in regards to correcting its potential weaknesses. There just isn't enough information to form a competent plan of attack.

But it's frustrating because we had enough talent to compete this year. I get it, they were free agents, and we weren't gonna sign them so we traded them. But we didn't trade them for anything impactful, IMO. The fact that BA didn't get any of the acquired assets in the top 100 prospects was shocking to me. How does Jason Heyward, Justin Upton, and Evan Gattis not produce at least ONE consensus top 100 prospect. So we punted the next two years but I don't we set ourselves up at all for 2017.

I don't see a realistic path to success unless we sign someone of the caliber of... Heyward or JUp.

We have flat out said (or we've been told by posters on here), that we are simply unable or unwilling to do it.

I don't see any teams trading premium hitters away for premium pitching. Maybe I'm wrong. But there's just too much pitching available.

We'll see. I just hope we start drafting really well. But I'm not holding my breath that our first round pick will be another pitcher.

Just signing one of them would have brought us to no where. We could have signed both and had the same in two years that we did last year. Last year's team didn't work.

Now, if we sign someone of that caliber or close next off-season, in addition to all the pieces added, we may be getting somewhere.
If Heyward has a similar season for the Cards that he did for us last year, he isn't getting over $20 mil. He probably isn't coming back here, but it won't make us look so crazy for not giving him more than that.

Yeah. It's frustrating. And I tend to agree that we didn't set ourselves up well at all for 2017. We'll see.

BA may not have, but Fangraphs had a lot of our prospects in the top 100. Are they better or worse than BA? I don't know. But they seemed to like some of our guys a lot more, and consider a couple of them very impactful.

The only way we were competing with Heyward and Upton on the team this year was if Heyward got back to consistency and became a legit middle-of-the-order bat. Upton's lows and hitting with RISP were always woeful. I think JUp's month-by-month numbers looked more consistent in 2014 than in 2013, but still. When he went cold for a week or two, it was insanely cold. Like K-ing every other AB, never bringing a guy in cold. Was it a SSS? Idk, but his approach certainly wasn't great a lot.

I don't think this offseason was easy for the FO. I'm sure they considered the prospect of a consistent Heyward making a big difference and competing. The caveat lies with what happens after, if we don't compete or win anything. JUp and Heyward walk. Farm is still empty (unless the Gattis trade still happened). That isn't a good combo. I'd have probably preferred to trade one and keep one of Heyward and JUp, but I don't think it's crazy to say we sold high on Heyward (maybe after this season we won't be able to say that). But, plenty of people liked our side of that deal. We only had one more year before big money was coming his way.

And as I've said in other threads, I think a lot of our prospects have the opportunity to take big steps this year and prove that they're the impact guys we're looking for. I think there is a lot of potential upside in the farm. They're not all considered studs right now, but some of them have the talent to emerge as such.

It's possible, perhaps even likely, but they also made it feel like they had a vendetta against Wren and just wanted to destroy what he built. There definitely was a personal grudge side to this whole offseason.

How long did it take them to deal Kyle? 10 minutes after the firing?

I don't know. I think Hart figured on three things. First, keeping Heyward and Upton was impossible. Keeping Justin to me seemed logical if not for Uggla's contract. Second Gattis is a one trick pony and his body is going to break down. Better he do that somewhere else. Lastly the Braves lacked depth and the only way to fix that was fix the farm. I concede that on paper we look like a fourth place team, but in all fairness last years team with the supposed star power was almost exactly that a fourth place team. So why not blow it up and fix it? Even if we keep Justin, Jason and Evan there is no guarantee we don't finish 4th given the depth of the NL East anyway.

I loved the Gattis trade. I loved basically all of the trades EXCEPT for JUP and Heyward. And those were the two (along with Gattis) we couldn't afford to screw up on. I think we did.

I would have liked to have seen us keep one of Heyward/Upton with an extension. Make the exact same trades if nothing was better, and then invest in Moancada. That would've given me a lot of hope for the future.

Oh, and not sign ****ing Markakis
