Braves in talks with DBacks for Trevor Cahill

I disagree with him being worth more than Wandy at all as long as Wandy is healthy. Arizona fans are offering to pay for a limo to get him out of town for a reason.

Wandy may be more effective inning for inning, but Cahill wins out on durability in my view.

Spending too much on Cahill isn't the end of the world since it's just one year, but still. I guess we can just pretend we still have Russell and call it good!

Again I disagree, you don't throw away 6 million just to throw it away.

We have money to spend and need pitching. If we take on $6M of his contract for only 1 season in order to not give up much in terms of prospects you do it.

If the Braves add Cahill they will have spent roughly $32MM on Markakis, Callaspo, Grilli, Gomes, Pierzynski, and the aforementioned. Just in 2015.

Personally, I'd rather have given all of that to Heyward. Or put it away until 2017. Or built a massive art deco penis in center field at Suntrust.

The opportunity cost isn't zero, so I agree in essence with what you are saying. But if the team views payroll as a year to year budget, then leaving additional payroll space does nothing in future years. It's not like the Braves can rollover the unused payroll.

Of course we could use that money at the deadline to acquire a player, but I'm under the assumption the Braves will be out of it by then so what good would that do.

Maybe the hope is Cahil has a bounce back year with his sinker (Hello Roger) and he can be flipped at the deadline for a better prospecct then they will have to trade now to get him.

That's bull****. Why spend money without a clear upgrade?

Nobody is saying he's a great pitcher. But he's relatively young and outside of last year has been durable. We need pitchers who can throw innings right now and I have zero confidence in Wandy lasting through the year or Stults being good enough to keep a spot. Let's just see what we give up before freaking out.

6:04pm: The Diamondbacks and Braves are “on the verge” of sending Cahill to Atlanta, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports (Twitter link).

I swear we better not be giving up anything worth a damn.

I don't believe that poster believes that Cahill doesn't improve the team. You are making completely different arguments.

Cahill is a serviceable 4/5 guy in the rotation when healthy. He averaged more than 2 WAR per year in Oakland and he's still young. It's not like there isn't any upside here.

Now if the trade off is trading a good prospect then I'll be the first to raise my pitchfork, but if the only cost is $6 million, then I don't see the real downside here.

Cahill had a 3.89 FIP last year. I don't think GB pitchers are a good pairing in Arizona.

If you put Cahil in Atlanta with Simmons/Peterson/AND PLEASE SOMEONE OTHER THAN CJ then he could have a bounce back year and the Braves flip him for a good prospect.

OK this would be a good deal if the following happens:

CJ and Cody Martin traded to DBacks for Cahill and a reliever
Cahill then flipped with a lower level prospect (and possibly cash as well) for Jackie Bradley Jr.

Frees up money and nets us JBJ

Wont freak out until i see who is going their way.

Aint my money so why yall going crazy over it?

Pretty much the same thoughts.

If the deal is low-cost, prospects wise, i dont see the big outrage.

Comcast offices gotta go somewhere. That sounds appropriate.

Minus Markakis, all of those deals are one-year/stop gap signings.

Please stop with the Heyward stuff.

Cahill had a 3.78, and 3.99 ERA the last 2 years before last year.

Not saying it's a good move but one, the Braves will probably be out of the race by the trade deadline.

Two, if Roger works his magic, could get something in return for him.

Not saying it's a great move but let's wait and see what is going their way before blowing our heads off.
