Braves in talks with DBacks for Trevor Cahill

I admit to having some indigestion when I heard "prospects." But this is ok. A gamble with upside, and adds some depth to the rotation.

I think there is close to zero percent chance he is here beyond 2015, even if he were to win the Cy Young.

So we should pay 2 million for a significantly worse pitcher like Wandy or Stults to be our 5th starter? That makes more sense?

He has a career 4.07 ERA and 4.28 FIP. His 2010 season everyone praises was a 4.19 FIP. Last year when everyone was down on him, it was 3.89. That's pretty much what he is, ~4 era

Pretty sure I never said that especially after he got hurt in the middle of the season. That said if Floyd had managed to stay healthy and continued pitching as he was likely would have gotten a 8-10 per deal.

It's not like the unused money for 2015 gets added to future payrolls. The money is there to spend, why not spend it? Especially when it's a 1 year deal before his free agency and you're paying less than 6 million for his services?
 
I like this deal. Cahill is a low risk guy with the potential to catch lightning in a bottle. Elander is already 23 and seems stuck in A ball. Add in the draft pick and we could win big on this move.

I don't. If you're developing young talent for 2017, develop it. Don't trade for a $6m tomato can and let him eat innings that Martin or several others could use to develop. If we needed to round out the back end of our rotation in order to contend, you might take a flyer on somebody like this.

But that's not where we're at and even if we were, this isn't the guy.

He doesn't throw strikes, he doesn't have repeatable mechanics, he's very out of shape and, in my opinion, he's not very bright. If there's no clear upside - and between him, Wandy, and Stoltz, there's not - why burn the $5.5m?

Another goofy 3 Johns move that they'll claim as genius. It's like a rebuild with a Goodwill placekeeper.

With good reason. This is yet another head scratcher. Cmon, you're not competing this year. You should have spent this, KJ, Grilli, Callaspo and a few others' money and bought Olivera or Moncada. Or another wing in the Dominican Academy.

This front office hasn't steered a clear heading. I don't know what they're trying to do. If it's win, they're not going to do that with Trevor Cahill.
