I don't see how it hurts 2017. We aren't picking anyone in the draft who will play in 2017. Only way it hurts is if we lose a pick b/c we sign a top FA. Just don't sign a top FA. I don't want to give 5+ years to 30+ y/o pitchers. It might work out, but I think we can develop a good rotation.

Playing at around .500 will not be playing games that matter, and it will hurt 2017 by not helping it. Even if we don't sign a FA, which I think we will have to, we can use the draft to create depth to trade from for 2017, if needed, which I also think will be.

The rebuild is going to happen from within and then when the time is right capitalize on a trade. I think the focus should just be ot build up the minors and avoid free agency.

I just don't see how the 9th pick is different from the 20th pick if we aren't signing a big time FA.

And I think it will matter. With parity in the game, you could still be in the WC contention till late in the year hovering around 500.

2017 is not going to be what Hart says it is unless we get 2/5:
1. significant improvement from one of our current hitters-thinking simmons, CB, Peterson, Markakis
2. Peraza needs to be really good (hit over 300 b/c he won't walk and steal over 20 bases while being great on D)
3. FA hitter with OPS over 0.850.........More likely trade for a hitter with OPS over 850..........I don't see who that FA would be right now.
4. Rotation becomes dominant. Right now we're good. But we would probably need two of Wisler, Folty, Minor, Simms, Fried (2018 more likely), ManBan, Jenkins to be 75% or better of their Ceiling with Tehran and Wood being themselves and Miller being close to his ceiling. ***And if we trade for that hitter we prob lose at least one of those options.
5. Ruiz, D Peterson, Mallex Smith, or Paroubeck is ready by 2017 and can be an OPS 800+ and be at least avg at their position
 
We'll also need a closer. I think Hart will go hard after Neftali Feliz. Clark wants him back.

I'm hoping with Coppella's saber back ground he won't value a closer too much. Get another reclaim project or put someone like Viz, Folty, Hursh, etc back there.

Playing .500 ball will keep the team within reaching distance of the second wild card. .500 ball is 81 wins. Second wild card could be an 85-87 win team. This team really isnt all that much worse than the Royals team last year. Everyone wanted them to sell last year saying they had no chance and they ended up in the world series.

You guys are missing the point, for the most part. The people who could possibly turn this team from a loser with a great draft pick to just a loser won't be part of the 2017 team, which means this would be bad in every possible way. 70 wins is better than 80 for the 2017 team. THAT can't be argued. I'm sorry. It can't. The only thing that can be argued is to what degree it is better.
 
I agree but you play to win the game. Cant teach the young players how to win games by not trying to win games. Whats better about winning 80 is that it tells us we dont have as far to go to get back to the promised land.

Oh, I'm not saying not to try to win after building the team. That line of thinking (70 wins vs 80) needs to come into play when signing players like Markakis, Grilli, Gomes, and Johnson. That's why I call it a Mukaki Rebuild.

Except the players largely responsible will not be part of the 2017 team (promised land) with the possible exception of Markakis and Freeman.

Except that someone needs to teach the young players how to win, you can't expect them to learn it on their own.

I think it can be argued if you want to go the route of you don't want to breed losers. You want the team to win together, learn how to win, and play as many important games as possible. In a vacuum it may be better to lose for 2017, but I don't necessarily see it that way. You want young guys to play well.

Winning in the minor leagues is different than winning in the major leagues. If that wasn't the case every minor leaguer would transition to the major leagues with no problem. As we've see though it's not that easy.
 
And you can grab a player like Markakis to teach players how to win, if you want, without jeopardizing the growth of the players involved in 2017 OR the draft pick. You don't go in a rebuilding year and grab a bunch of them and keep young players from playing and also hurt your draft pick.
