Sherman: Braves offered Heyward 80M after 2013

The Braves offered Heyward around $80 million following the 2013 season and the belief was that he would seek at least Jacoby Ellsbury’s $153 million or even $200 million. That will be a hard sell off of these first two months.

Interesting to see the speculation put in print. So apparently the Braves did make an offer to Heyward.
 
Of course they made him an offer, he and his agent were just wanting insane money.

It was talked about all winter.

I'm sure the haters will spin it otherwise though.

Yeah. And looking at the numbers it was likely a 6 year deal. Which would have likely put him at 16-17 million per year in his FA deals. I would have turned that down too if I was Heyward. Even with a crap year he's likely to get that or close to it.

I agree. It's absolutely Heyward's right to ask for more. I'm speaking more to the consensus of some that the Braves never approached Heyward about a contract extension.

Yeah. If this it true it's pretty much what I thought. They offered him one but wanted it to be below market value.

More precisely they wanted want that was commensurate with his true value. Heyward has every right to have more but geez so many posters look foolish noW. It was obvious that Ramadon was speaking from a position of ibformation.

We knew they offered him an extension last offseason, that was well discussed. And instead he signed the 2/14 or whatever it wound up being. It's not a horrible offer at 5/80 if that was a contract not an extension after arb. You figure his FA would be 3/65. But the years are I'm sure what did him in. I bet if we did 7/110 he would have signed. Basically what Freeman signed for but at a lower valuation cause Freeman had more control years.

I remember reading a lot of posts from people criticizing the Braves for the assumption that they "never even discussed an extension" for Heyward. I'm not accusing you of that, but there were plenty that threw those accusations at the FO.

I could be misremembering, but that was the gripe after this offseason about not approaching him before trading him. Not the previous offseason.

Correct: the question was whether they broached extenting him in the 2014 offseason. It was well-known extensions were discussed in the 2013 offseason since, you know, he signed one (albeit shorter than hoped).
 
If he continues to hit the way he has been hitting, he will be lucky to get 50 mill.

He's a career .261 hitter with less than 20 hr's a year....amazes me that people think he is worth more than 80 mill because he still has "potential". He has been in the league 6 years...at some point potential goes out the window.

Oh yea, he can catch and throw a baseball better than most, so I guess that makes him a 100 million dollar player.....

Fair points, he's well liked by the saber community.

The Heyward homers will bash you for that though.
 
A big question about Heyward that I have is who exactly is he taking advice from on his hitting? Because it seems to me that he certainly isn't taking advice from his coaches.

Jason Heyward is a very talented ball player who I really hoped would play his entire career in Atlanta. However, he's not nearly as good as his talent suggests. He is a career underachiever to this point.

Cause the only numbers that matter are average and homers.

He's an above average hitter on his career (about average for position) and one of the best defenders relative to position in the game. If you don't think he's a good player, that's fine, you can have whatever opinion you like no matter how wrong it is.
