Around Baseball 2015 Edition

Per Jon Heyman:

The Dodgers appear to be working toward a deal with yet another big-time Cuban player, 19-year-old righthander Yadier Alvarez. Kiley McDaniel of Fangraphs first reported LA had made a $16-million offer. While there's no written agreement yet, folks are suggesting they expect Alvarez to land in LA. Alvarez is a big-time athlete who hit 97-98 mph in workouts, shocking folks. This follows the $62.5-million deal for Hector Olivera, so there will be talk about the Dodgers' having an unfair advantage in the wallet. They certainly are throwing their spending power around.

I really wish that baseball would do something about this. The Dodgers are taking what the Yankees did to another level. Its absurd.

If he is 19 the international slot system applies. But I believe the Dodgers can bust through it and take the penalties like the Red Sox did with Moncada. There is speculation the Braves will do this with the 2017 international signing period.

Its only a problem if it helps the Braves. Baseball rejected their 2 billion dollar tv deal because it wasnt enough money but 30 year tv deal at a cut rate to a company owned by Time Warner while they are in the process of selling the team is just fine. Having a national TV deal, whoa better change the rules so teams can only cash in on their predefined local territory so that big market teams will always have more money. Remember the draft and follow process the Braves were so good at? Would be a shame if someone ended it arbitrarily. I bet if the braves spend big on the 2016 international market like was rumored we will get an international draft real quick.
 
Under the assumption that Heyward performs like this all season what woudl it take to sign him?

I'd love to have him back at a 6 year 90 million dollar deal. I don't believe he is comfortable in STL and now that he is being semi-platooned I doubt that he is going to sign there long term.

He's not really being platooned. He sat last night against Kershaw, but he had played every game since his hip injury (which, btw, started the narrative he was being platooned).

I would love to sign him. I honestly could be talked into almost any amount even if I understand the logic of not giving him a $100M. Heyward is cool.

Having Heyward back is all fine and dandy, but it doesn't really improve the offense much which is what we need from new hitters.

He didn't play June 2nd but that was against a righty as well.

I think Heyward will be available this offseason at our price range.

I have to admit that after watching Markakis, whom I am a big fan of, that right field defense is really important and it would be great to have Heyward out there for the next 5 years.

I think the offense has been just fine this year. I think if we improved our run prevention and bullpen that we would see an even greater improvement in wins.

Agreed on all accounts. Markakis doesn't have a strong arm anymore (neck surgery?), but it is still extremely accurate and would play well in LF where he doesn't have to make the throw to 3B.
 
I would like to see what Seitzer could do with Heyward. With the job he's done with Peterson and Maybin he looks to be a miracle worker.
 
Despite what i've said about him, i'd take him back if he would come affordable, and not 200+ mil.

I'd still prefer JUp but im not sure how he ages.

Why Boone selected Miller: At 24 years of age we are starting see the emergence of a top-of-the-rotation pitcher. The command of a two-seamer and cutter have made the need for a changeup not necessary, although I'd love to see him add the change at some point.

ESPN Stats & Info says: Miller is having arguably the best season of any pitcher in baseball, and he's still just 24 years old. His ERA+ is the best among qualified starters in 2015.

Hes made 11 more out of zone plays than Simmons in 102 fewer innings.
