2015 June Draft Results Thread

Oh man... Another college reliever. At least this is about the range where it's justifiable.

We better have some good bullpen arms in a couple years with how much we have invested in them this draft.

I feel like we will be saying this about every pick for the rest of the draft. Must be saving money for the Cuban players. It was their plan all along!

I followed the first four picks and think they should be solid prospects. Since then, it's been a bit odd to me.

Aside from the Allard pick it's hard to argue otherwise.
Agreed...perhaps I'm wrong, but money saved on the amateur draft has nothing to do with international signing pools? If so, this is definitely underwhelming....and I'm a FO apologist!
(Well sometimes......)

Ok? I get that. But taking a guy 50+ slots ahead of where he's ranked early in the draft, even in the MLB draft, is still reaching, at least a bit. And getting somewhat lesser talent while not getting the additional value of having more money for later picks, is strange to me.

The rankings from about 15 to 100 are pretty much interchangeable. If he lived in Florida he would have been ranked higher. Scouts dont get to see cold weather players as much and that hurts their stock. This kid is 6'5 with elite ability to spin the ball. He has as high of upside as any prep pitcher in this draft.

I'll reserve judgement until I see what these guys sign for. I'm seriously content as long as we spend all the draft pool money. If we went cheap in the most important draft in years, then I'm going to be pissed.

Its impossible for me to say this is either a good or a bad draft because i have absolutely no clue on these players.

I agree with this.

College arms are a good bet in the middle rounds (4-10). That's what we've taken in rounds 4 & 5. Both have some upside (ie could be starting pitchers) but most likely will contend for jobs in the pen if they make it at all.

My understanding of the slotting system is that it's through the first 10 rounds only. So if our strategy has been to go underslot on some of the 8 picks so far in order to go overslot later in draft, we've got 5 more picks to unveil that strategy.

I'm getting increasingly nervous that this is not the strategy, and we're just out in left field on some of these guys. Maybe we end up being right in places where the conventional wisdom was wrong, but I'm definitely feeling uneasy about what is a critical draft.

There are limits on what you can spend per player after Round 10, but you can roll over any savings you have in your pool from the first 10 rounds to avoid paying a penalty for going above the limit on guys drafted past Round 10. I think the Braves did that with Grosser.

Every single pick we make, I keep convincing myself that it's just to save money for Donnie Everett in the next few rounds. It's all I can hold onto at this point.

Cool, that makes me feel a bit better. Also, can they possibly make this system more complicated? My land.

I think you can certainly grump about the Braves picking guys who were ranked a bit low early in the draft. But right now the rankings have become meaningless to me. They all kind of bundle together. Just have to trust the scouting at this point.

But I think there's a legit question about picking Soroka and Riley where we did.

Reds take former Brave draft pick Jimmy Herget in the 6th.

Mariners took former Brave draft pick Braden Bishop in the 3rd.

Gio Brusa and Ben Johnson still there for a Braves' re-draft.

So maybe the strategy is to go underslot as much as possible through round 10, and then spend the overage in the later rounds on several high upside HS players that would otherwise go to college? It's more of a "quantity" approach than a "quality" approach, but I can see the wisdom in that.
