Braves are savlaging a salary dump (FG article on Maybin's resurgence)

Maybin is now hitting .296 avg, .371 OBP and .798 OPS and leads the team in stolen bases with 9 -- I'd say he has been a great salary dump pick-up so far. Julio if y'all recall said he'd pick him up when the Padres DFA'd him even before he was included the Kimbrel/Upton trade to dump salary from Padres perspective. He's making Julio look very good so far.

This is the kind of thinking that goes completely against what the Braves have been doing since Wren was cut loose.

I think it is blatantly obvious the Braves will be trying to acquire young dynamic arms and try to groom them into top of the rotation pitchers, rather than paying a premium to acquire an established Ace. Ride the young guns until they flame out, then get rid of them and bring up the next guy in line.

If you're going to splurge with a contract, do so with a position player. They tend to have better shelf lives.

The moves made after Wren was cut loose were made entirely because the farm was so barren and we weren't in a great position to win past 2015. That's a big concern with a new stadium coming up. Now the farm is rich, and looks to get richer after this draft. Trading some excess pitching for a bat makes sense if you also sign a FA pitcher. That way you aren't really hurting your pitching depth. All while we have talented pitching prospects, the likelihood of them being better than guys like Samardzija or Greinke in 2017 is unlikely.

If we signed J-Up or J-Hey, I would be ecstatic. I highly doubt it happens however as I believe those bridges are burned, particularly with J-Up. And no other hitters are really worth the money they are likely to get in FA.

Is Samardizja really much better than what we have currently, at the money he'll command.

Would love Greinke but just not sure they'll be in on the aces after acquiring so much pitching last winter.

Only problem is after Justin, and Cespedes, there isnt many power hitting outfielders next winter.

So they probably have to trade for one and players like that cost a lot to get in trades.

Some can be had cheaply due to bad contracts, health or performance risk. Like Cargo and Kemp.

I could see Ethier or Crawford available as a salary dump.

Kemp's contract is too long for my liking.

CarGo yeah depending what it costs to get him.

But yes, assuming we dont sign one of the big name FA's, would most likely have to be in on some salary dumps.

Samardzija isn't even good... He's always been one of the most overrated pitchers. Electric stuff with consistently average to below average results.

Hypothetical, would you trade Maybin to get Kimbrel back? As much as we need BP help Maybin is too important to the offense imo. Without him it's Cunningham out there every day and that would he brutal.

Not just hypothetical, it's not even realistic at all. I don't want to trade Maybin but sure I'd do that deal for the best closer in the game. Have y'all forgotten how much Kimbrel is worth in a trade already? If so, just look what all we got for him while also dumping Melvin Upton, Jr's contract in the process. We couldn't even pull that off with trading Justin Upton, but for Kimbrel we finally found a match. Further, it just goes to show how much we'd got in return for Kimbrel alone without making a team take back Melvin.

IMO a solid CF is worth more than a $12M closer - even one as awesome as Kimbrel

That same "solid CFer" along with multiple prospects including top prospect Wisler and a draft pick came back for Kimbrel while dumping Melvin's contract. So if you think Maybin has anywhere near the trade value as Kimbrel you're just plain wrong. No offense meant as I like you and think some give you too hard a time around here.

Keep in mind you could still trade Kimbrel again later for a lot more than Maybin is worth in any deal.

I think I would take Kimbrel just because I still worry about Maybin regressing and/or getting injured. If Maybin can keep up his .300/.375/.425 line and hit 15 homers with 30 SB's playing CF he is worth a heck of a lot more than Kimbrel. We dont even know what Maybin's ceiling is. I keep expecting him to cool down but he just gets hotter. Hitting almost .500 for June.

One thing I want to note about Maybin goes back to my take on him earlier this season. Do y'all recall when Fredi was platooning him with EY Jr. and starting Maybin vs mostly lefties and EY Jr. vs righties? I argued Maybin is a better hitter vs righties so that didn't make sense (not that starting EY Jr. over Maybin ever made sense). Well, now that Maybin is starting vs both he's hitting .328 vs righties (.828 OPS) and .208 vs lefties (.690 OPS) -- .303 average overall with a .799 OPS. But don't tell Fredi that...
