Three-way talk

I like Cameron Maybin a lot, and I don't think that it's outside of the realm of possibility that he is able to produce at the same level for the remainder of his current contract and beyond.

That said, if Hart is able to move him at this sort of zenith, AND it comes with dumping CJ plus acquiring some interesting talent in return ... I'm open.

Yep. It's weird to eat a bad contract for a prospect and then kill Maybin's value by trying to unload a bad contract. It's the one problem I still have with the Mukaki Rebuild. They appear on the fence too often with their approach. One dick on the present and two eyes on the future...or whatever.
 
I'm sure teams are calling on Maybin so why not tell them they have to take CJ. I'd. Rather keep him but if we can get rid of CJ and get a return then its good business.
 
At this point, you have to convince me that any of the kiddies coming along are going to be anywhere near as good as Maybin has been this season. He's in his prime, and this is what his potential has always indicated he was capable of. Since it's clear no one is going to take him off our hands, you can bring CJ back next spring and let him fight for a job; if he still stinks, DFA him and blame Wren.

That assumes spending will mirror the increase. Right now, Maybin is passable as a bat in CF and his defense is average to below average. In LF he would be one of the worst LF in the league, likely just ahead of what we have there now.

Better. The whole point of the rebuild was to turn over a team that was badly constructed and bring some talent and normalcy back. There are three ways to do that: 1. FA signings. 2. Trade for ML players or minor league talent. 3. Draft and International FA signings.

I agree that FA bat pickings for the next couple of years are pretty slim. Dexter Fowler (career .777 OPS) is probably equal to Maybins ceiling with the bat and better defensively. He'll cost more than Maybin does. How much more likely depends on how he finishes this year with the Cubs where he is slumping. But, if you believe in Mallex then you don't need him anyway. You have other similar such as Cespedes, Jackson, and Denard Span.

So, you can trade for ML players or minor league talent. Too many options to list.

Or, you can draft or International sign your own. The problem with this approach is that these players are an unknown time away from contributing, if they ever do.

Bottom line for me is, no matter what is being said by the Front Office, the Braves are not serious about contending this year or next. So, you do WHATEVER is best to have the best team in 2017 and sustainability beyond.

Maybe im being a homer but they can absolutely contend next year for a WC spot depending what moves are made.

I dont see whats so crazy about that.

So i dont see the need to give Maybin away just to get rid of CJ's deal which isnt THAT bad.

There's like 50 mil in payroll to players next year, and if the payroll is around 90-100, they have PLENTY to spend on a couple bats, bullpen arms, depth, etc.

So even still, no need to give Maybin away, Harry.

“To be able to be close to home—my mom, my father, family and friends—it’s been a new-found energy, as well as being healthy has been a big part of it. I’m having a blast playing here. We will see what happens but I am really enjoying my time here.”
 
With Mallex coming, and Markakis unfortunately not going anywhere, and they'll need a power bat at some point, someone has to go.

Unfortunately it has to be Maybin.

I understand what you are saying but unless a player is a franchise staple like CJ, Smoltz, Maddux, Glavine etc. I don't get too caught up on personal investment on players.

I am a fan of the Braves TEAM first and foremost. I want what is best for the team today and in the future. I want an opportunity for team Division, League and ultimately WS wins and an extended run of excellence. If that means temporary pain for extended gain, then so be it.

This is dumb logic, we dont have a huge payroll so we're not gonna have a star everywhere.

Having solid players is fine. Obviously we need 2-3 power bats going forward, thats no secret.

We cant trade every player just to trade him, thats a horrible way to build a team.

You obviously aren't catching my point. The point is that I fully understand and have bought in to the idea that the target is 2017. Sure, everyone talks about being competitive along the way. But, that's just so they don't lose the fanbase, a "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain" move.

Anyone that knows baseball at all can look at this team and see that there is virtually no shot at the playoffs much less at a WS. The pitching is young and has potential but is erratic. The bullpen is just ok. The offense is anemic regardless of the recent surge.

So, with that said, ANY player who is not tied up long term into 2017 and beyond should be viewed as fair game for trade if (and however) it improves the chances of the team being good in 2017 and beyond. That means I trade just about any veteran on the Team, including Miller and/or Wood for the RIGHT return without concern of what it means to the record or the professionalism of play in 2015 or 2016.

I would MUCH rather trade Markakis.
