2015 DRAFT SIGNING THREAD

Latest On Braves’ First-Rounder Kolby Allard
By Steve Adams [July 6, 2015 at 11:21am CDT]
The Braves have signed all of their top picks with the exception of first-round selection Kolby Allard, and David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that it’s looking like there’s a “legit chance” that Allard will honor his commitment to UCLA rather than sign with Atlanta (Twitter links). O’Brien does add that there’s a chance this could be posturing in an attempt to get a bit more money out of the Braves.

Selected with the No. 14 overall pick in this year’s draft, Allard’s slot comes with a value of $2,842,200. However, Allard was at one time speculated to be selected within the top 10, if not top five picks of this year’s draft before a stress reaction in his back cost him about two months of his senior season at San Clemente High School in California. As such, it’s possible that Allard’s advisers are pushing for a bonus that’s more commensurate with higher draft slots.

The Braves were assigned a bonus pool of $10,684,100 (via Baseball America) heading into this year’s draft, and they’ve saved a total of $87,500 on the rest of their picks from the top 10 rounds, per MLB.com. The Braves can also exceed their allotted bonus pool by 4.99 percent before incurring the loss of a pick in next year’s draft, which comes out to about $533K. Paired with the $87,500 they’ve saved on their other top picks, that means the Braves could afford to offer Allard up to $3,462,000 (roughly $620,600 over slot) without losing a future pick. That value would be just slightly below the slot value of the No. 8 overall selection ($3,470,600).

Allard ranked sixth on the Top 100 of ESPN’s Keith Law heading into the draft, while MLB.com rated him 16th, and he placed 18th on the draft lists of BA and Fangraphs. Allard was considered the top prep arm in this year’s class thanks to a plus curve and an above-average fastball before injuring his back, per Law. Should Allard indeed end up attending UCLA, the Braves would be awarded with the 15th overall pick in next year’s draft (one slot lower than that of the failed signing).

Wouldn't Allard have to stay 3 years at UCLA?

THat seems awfully risky.

Yeah, the whole 'I could have been a top 10 or even top 5 pick' argument is fine for negotiation, but it's a really dumb reason to go to school and leave top 10 money on the table.

Of course, literally all this speculation is coming from one tweet from O'Brien; and we don't know how much he really knows, and even he says it's likely Allard signs.

In fairness, the speculation is only partly about DOB's tweet. A lot of the concern is rooted in the fact that we went from "Oh, there's no doubt Allard's going to sign, it's in the bag" on draft day to "um, hey, it's about 10 days before the deadline and Allard hasn't signed yet, what's the dealio?"

I would agree. Something is absolutely up. It doesn't necessarily mean we aren't signing him but what once seemed like a sure bet is looking a bit suspect right now.

Well, sure. But before writing an article like this, you need to have some substance. And the only substance is O'Brien's tweet.

For all we know, both sides are still as confident as ever that a deal will get done and are just posturing. The only reason it's now gone beyond just speculation or guessing is O'Brien's tweet...which itself could just be speculation and guessing. That's my only point.

Can't question that. Part of the reason I expressed concern well over a week ago in post #173.

One reason I'm still confident is because none of it makes much sense. If they're still negotiating, then a deal will absolutely get done unless the Braves just decide they'd rather have the 15th pick next year, and I don't imagine that's the case.

As I said earlier, Allard knows exactly what the Braves can offer...so if they're still negotiating, we haven't offered that much yet. And I assume the Braves will go as high as they can to get it done.

Posturing doesn't concern me. If he doesn't pitch in 2015 at all, I'm ok with that, to give him more time to find his "normal" health-wise.

Allard would be a fool to go to a three-year school. If we hear he's looking to swtich to a juco, then the Braves need to start sweating it out.

It's quite possible that the Braves told him they could give him something like $4M by signing a lot of other guys under slot. The Braves supposedly went out and drafted a bunch of guys that would sign under slot deals (remember that excuse for all the apparent reaches?), but somehow only managed to come up with an extra $87k to throw Allard's way.

And doesn't the team get taxed somehow for the extra 4.99% they could be considering giving to Allard? If so that makes it even more expensive.

But there's no way the Braves would have signed those guys ahead of signing Allard if they knew they were taking away from the amount they had quoted to Allard.

If Allard passed his physical and this is just hardball negotiating, then I think a deal get's done.

There's also the possibility that an issue came up during the physical and the Braves adjusted their offer accordingly . . . Brady Aiken redux. If that's the case, then this thing could be in real jeopardy.

That's true, though in that case, I would think the Braves would rather just take next year's pick. But the team doctors looked at him prior to the draft, right?

Not a single person ever called you an idiot you called yourself that and I don't care what anyone says until he officially signs with UCLA I could care less.

Maybe not an idiot... But you did go out of your way to croon sarcastically post after post that my concern was obviously silly. I'm glad you could care less about the rumors... Good for you and a huge pat on the back?
