Around Baseball 2015 Edition

Greinke is such a boss, should start the ASG.

But ERA is a stupid stat, holding the other team scoreless is overrated.

I don't think that anyone is actually ever arguing that having a low ERA is anything but good. The issue with it is simply that it does not give you a complete story. A pitcher that is allowing a number of baserunners but didn't give up the corresponding runs is almost certainly just lucky. Getting out of a jam is more luck than skill, because clearly the pitcher is doing something to get into those situations, and more often than not, they'll continue to do those same things over the course of a season. The only real question for me is what weight you want to put on that kind of luck for evaluating past performance. For projecting future success, it's absolutely vital, but I can at least see an argument for rewarding a pitcher with an ERA that is not indicative of his real ability.

Friedman's Dodgers released Brandon League and DFA'd Chris Reed (their #10 prospect [and 1st round draft pick in 2011] headed into this season) today. Both guys intrigue me -- Reed especially.

I forgot how shallow their system was going into this season. They had all these big name prospects at the top of the system, but man does it thin out in a hurry. I suppose that'll change in a hurry with this IFA crop, especially Yadier Alvarez.

He was never coming to the Braves then.

He would have if we offered the most money, which we should have because he has been worth it both from what he did and what signing him would have prevented us from doing(signing Melvin). Greinke would have been a huge upgrade over Maholm in 2013 while the CF production without Melvin couldn't get any worse. Todd Cunningham could have replaced Melvin and done less harm because he would have hit 8th. That team won 96 games, replace Maholm and Melvin for Greinke and we might win 106. That would have give us an enviable playoff rotation of Greinke/Medlen/Minor/Teheran that I think atleast gets us past the NLDS. In 2014 we don't sign Santana because we have Greinke, team probably still flops.

Regardless of this, though, we saw CF as more of a need, so that was always where we were going to spend money.

#Pirates are interested in trading for Jeff Francoeur, among other bench and platoon bats, as I just reported on our @MLBONFOX telecast.

There is reason to believe that someone is playing a practical joke on Jon Morosi.

Greinke said he would play for a last place team if they offered the most money. He did grow up a Braves fan and he attended Braves Spring Training as a fan when he took a break from pitching. No way he would balk at playing for th Braves.

If the bitch that is Zack Greinke wants money he better look elsewhere. Braves aren't going to spend on talent. Especially on a starting pitcher.

Now back to baseball...anyone think Houston can maintain their lead and actually win the west? I kept waiting for them to crumble and they did have a bad stretch and lost some ground, but they are legit. Their rotation is pretty good and dare I say they are buyers at the deadline.

Rosenthal reporting that the Reds are likely to make Jay Bruce available in the near future. He sucked last year, but has rebounded nicely. Wonder what his numbers would look like not playing at GAB half the time. Owed $12.5MM next season with a $13MM option in 2017.
