Trade Deadline/Rumors thread

The Neagle trade was the end of the High Water mark for the Braves. It directly led to the loss of Schmidt, the trade of Justice and Grissom, and the trade of Jermaine Dye. IMO, Neagle was added because Mazzone was coasting by then and didn't want to deal with non veteran pitchers. The sad thing was that Schmidt was just starting to come around and actually pitched better than Neagle the rest of the year. In Neagle's defense, he did have a good full year for the Braves and Schmidt continued to develop in Pittsburgh before becoming one of the better pitchers in the league for a few years.

Can you imagine: Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, Schmidt & Millwood as a rotation rounding in to 2000?
Can you imagine an outfield with a renewed Justice in RF and a young Jermaine Dye in LF while Grissom winds down his career in CF?
Of course the Braves would have had to fill the holes created by not having Lockhart and/or Boone at 2B and Embree and Remlinger in the pen.

But, I think its easy to see that the Neagle trade, while on the surface a success, set the stage for a whole lot of bad...

For whatever reason, that's when Schuerholz seemed to get behind the curve instead of in front of it.

@Ken_Rosenthal
#Yankees contacted #Phillies on Hamels, sources tell me and @jonmorosi. PHI likes Judge; NYY not planning to move Judge, Bird, Severino.

Ugh, even today I get mad thinking about the Jermaine Dye trade. It was a solution in search of a problem . . . just an egregious fornication with the family pet.

Mike Tucker was a super guy. I don't recall a Brave before or since who spent so much time signing autographs and talking to kids before games. He was a super guy who wasn't nearly as good at baseball as Jermaine Dye. Plus...teh Lockhart.

If #Nationals do make a deal this week, clubs that have spoken with them say they’re out to do “something big." Kimbrel? Chapman?

I'm pulling hard for the Mets—something that would have absolutely shocked thirteen-year-old me—but a loathing this deep for the Zombie Expos apparently makes strange bed-fellows.

I can't stand the nats either. I'm also pulling for the mets

And if Belliard doesn't get handcuffed on a sure DP ball that only netted a force out, we're out of that inning before Leyritz comes to the plate.

Horsehide Harry, I totally agree on the Neagle deal and the ripple effects. I actually saw Ron Wright play once. Harmon Killebrew redux. Short, barrel-chested kid with blacksmith forearms.

True on raffy but why was wohlers pitching in the 8th? If Neagle gives u 7 then bielecki or mcmicheal probably get you through the 8th. Neagle didnt even pitch 6 innings. Sure Avery struggled in 96 but remember his post season success including beating Cincinnati in the NLCS and Cleveland in the world series. Neagle was not needed

The only problem I have with these types of discussions is that they cause you to overthink things (not just you HH - all of us).

There were no absolutes you could take from that specific transaction that DIRECTLY led to the other transactions. Chipper and Smoltz both re-worked their deals when JS needed money to do something to keep the club in front of the chasers, and I'm quite sure Glavine, Maddux, and others would have as well. Dye quite likely would've agreed to backload his deal somewhat, etc..

When you try to single one trade or signing out as THE thing (good or bad), you miss things that could have happened that you normally wouldn't discount otherwise.

If you want an example, I'll throw out the fact that if the Tigers weren't desperate for a veteran SP when making a playoff push, the Braves don't win 14 straight Division Titles and JS, Bobby Cox, Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, and Chipper Jones don't wind up in the Hall Of Fame.

The Marlins are listening on Derek Dietrich. I'd love to stick him at 3B and see if he can hack it.
