Trade Deadline/Rumors thread

1) I wasn't one of those who thought our savings in Uribe-Johnson was all that great. I don't like either guy we got back in that deal and feel like we could have done better.

I agree.

2) This is unrelated to whether they should trade AJ. Bethancourt is at AAA because the Braves want him there to work on his defense and game calling. If we traded AJ I wouldn't be surprised if we ended up either bringing up someone else or signing a veteran catcher to take his spot. I understand wanting to put Bethancourt in at catcher but the Braves will do that when they want. If they wanted to do it right now then having AJ isn't going to stop them.

I disagree. Bethancourt is at AAA because the Braves are trying to motivate him. He doesn't need 'work' on his defense or game calling. He's in the doghouse.

3) You can't get mentorship from anyone. Look at last year's team. This is doubly true for catchers who have to work with the rotation. The Braves have a very, very young rotation and there was concern about Bethancourt's ability in this department. I have no problem keeping AJ for the benefit of the rotation.

I'm looking, and I still don't get what you are referring to -- especially in comparison to this year's team. How has AJ been a mentor? Have you read any quotes about young pitchers raving about his ethic or the chance to work with him? Can you even point to pitchers that are enjoying incredible results working with him exclusively? This is a weak argument. We're not talking about David Ross here.

I like AJ. I wouldn't be totally opposed to bringing him back next year. But I don't see any reason whatsoever to hang onto him this year.

In any event, we probably don't have to trade AJ today. There's a good chance he gets through waivers.

I doubt it. There hasn't been much movement on the C market so far, could be one of those 15 minutes before the deadline PTBNL deals.

Adage to remember today (from one GM): Buyers make more mistakes than sellers because buyers are more emotional. Sellers are more rational

From what the Braves have been saying, Bethancourt disappointed in his ability to block balls and call games. His arm is strong but other areas of his defense were considered lacking. There was a doghouse element too. Apparently they felt he wasn't working hard on getting better. In any event, he'll probably be back up in September and not before no matter what.

I've read a ton about AJ getting rave reviews from the Braves. They say he's a guy you hate on the other team but who is a tremendous teammate. The Braves have been so happy with him, even if they trade him they'll try to bring him back this offseason.

I'm not saying some pitchers are getting incredible results working with AJ. I'm saying that as a whole, having his experience behind the plate is good for a young pitching staff.

I'm not trying to say that AJ is our most valuable player. I'm just saying that there is value in keeping him. More value than trading him if we're only going to get minor league roster filler back.

I'm not discounting what AJ has meant maybe to some members of the team. In particular probably a calming influence. My thought though is that CB still should have been the catcher. If nothing more but to KNOW he's not the answer. I hated his lapses in defense, but it was a strength in the past despite his struggles. Now, his concentration is back, he's playing regularly and that has impacted him. His attitude is great and it makes me think he's more than salvageable. This from Gwinnett Daily:

Bethancourt is hitting .321 with five doubles, two homers and nine RBIs in 21 games, better numbers than he put up while climbing the ladder to Atlanta.

Defensively is where he has been watched most, though. Bethancourt, known for his strong arm, has thrown out seven of the 17 runners trying to steal on him while committing just one error and one passed ball.
“He been great,” Gwinnett manager Brian Snitker said. “I think he’s catching better than when he first came down. He’s had a great attitude and he’s done everything we’ve asked.”

There is some speculation within the industry about a possible BOS/Cubs/Padres three-way blockbuster taking shape. Lots of pieces that fit.

Soler and Ross probably involved... wish they'd get more interested in Teheran...

Seems quiet on the Braves front right now.

I think we're done. They don't seem particularly motivated to move Teheran or Maybin. They would if the right offer came along but I don't believe they think it likely. The vets can probably be traded in August so there's no rush there.

#Mets talking to #Tigers about Cespedes, sources tell me and @jonmorosi. One of their many options.

With Mets talks falling through on Bruce, wonder if they'd at least ask about Maybin again? Sounds like they really want to dump Lagares. Not sure how I feel about him. Coming off down year, OBP black hole, but elite defense in CF. His contract is 5 for $31m after this year.
