2016 Draft Position

I think we have a legitimate shot at a top 3 pick. Boston still has a fair bit of talent, Oakland has a crazy run differential, Colorado has a few impact bats and Miami still at least has a bunch of games left against us and the Phillies. I could easily see us dipping below those teams. Philly and Milwaukee seem like tough teams to out-suck, though.

Top 5 would be my guess

I have read where Kiley McDaniel says that scouts feel that there will be between 5-7 elite prospects come out of this draft. Most of that elite status centers around these players:

RHP Alec Hansen, Oklahoma
RHP Riley Pint, St. Thomas Aquinas HS (KS)
OF Blake Rutherford, Chaminade Prep HS (CA)
LHP A.J. Puk, Florida
OF Nick Banks, Texas A&M
RHP Austin Bergner, Windemere Prep (FL)
RHP Robert Tyler, Georgia

There are another couple of prospects that could jump into that group as well, with RHP Connor Jones of Virginia and LHP Jason Groome of IMG Academy two guys with high upsides.

I didn't think we'd lose 100 like some of the sad sacks thought prior to the season, but the white flag has gone up and it's indeed possible. My guess is we'll end up with a top five pick.

Up to 6th if we can lose with Bos winning today.

Few back of Oakland.

I have this feeling that if the Braves get a top 5 pick, they will choose someone not listed in the top 20 just to sign them to a cheaper contract.

Eh, they took Allard and signed him for top 10 draft pick money.

Pretty rare teams reach that high when you're in the top 5.

I don't see us making a pick based on money either, but the last time the Braves drafted that high they reached big time and drafted Minor at #7, rather than draft a more highly rated yet more expensive option like Shelby Miller. So we can't act like the Braves haven't done it before.

That being said, luckily the slotting system makes that pretty unlikely these days, so we can be pretty sure we'll go after the talent.

Meh it wasnt that big of a reach then.

But i guess we'll see if it happens.

Minor was expected to go at the very end of the first round that year, it was a huge reach. It was pretty much regarded as a WTF move a the time, at least by non-Braves homers.

But either way, the bonus pool slotting system we have for the draft now makes being cheap in the draft a thing of the past for the most part.

That was Wren; there's no way we'll make a similar pick now with the current philosophy.

I would go Rutherford or Beer if it were me.

I'd prefer a bat, but if we are in the top 5 range we should go BPA. I'm not going to say we should pass on a player like Pint or Puk just because we have good pitching in our system.

I am, to be honest, as long as any difference in value is negligible. The price for hitters on the market is too high; we have to start grooming our own.
