He said we had a lot go right, and he's not inherently wrong.
We've not missed a starting position player for more than 4 weeks I believe (Mac to start the season) Only lost one starter. The only spot we've been hurt injury wise is the bullpen where we lost our 2 lefty backend guys which stinks, and Martinez who may have been cut. While we've had down years from starters, Jason and Uggla haven't been that far down. They're still above average hitters. And the period where they sucked (start of the year) was likely due to injuries or not wearing prescription contacts. Since coming back from the DL Heyward has a .770ish OPS, and Uggla outside of April has been a bit better than he was then. Not amazing of course, but he's not been horrible either.
But we have had several guys posting seasons that they aren't likely (not saying they won't) to reproduce, Johnson for starters, then also Schafer. For relievers who knows if David Carpenter is for real. We do have questions, but we also as Stark fairly points out have a super young team. Only old dudes we will have are all hitting FA, Downs, Hudson, Mac (and 29 isnt' really that old) and Maholm. Next year our team right now shakes out to have 2 players over 30 for sure, Reed Johnson and Gerald Laird. We'll also likely have a reliever whether it's Loe or Martinez or someone else. Pretty insane.
What's gonna be fun is playing the speculate on the BP and bench game for next year
First it depends on if we keep Mac or not, if we keep Mac Gattis is on the bench in the same role he's in this year if not that role has opened up.
My crack at it
Gattis
Laird
Terds
Pastor
Schafer
Maybe Terds goes out for Pena, not sure what the Braves expect from him. Schafer will be an attractive trade piece fi he finishes the season strong and we would be wise to pawn him off while the iron is hot.
