GDT 8/9/13: Marlins (Turner) @ Braves (Beachy) 7:30 PM

FOOTBALL FOOTBALL FOOTBALL!

ALL ****ING YEAR! FOOTBALL!

You cannot escape it. I like to listen to sports talk radio (mainly because music is terrible on the radio), but all they talk about is football, football, football. It doesn't matter if it's the offseason, let's have another segment on ****ing football.

Oh wait! A segment on baseball is coming up! Oh, its about the Yankees.

Exactly. I love football as much as the next guy, but it's that type of **** that's got me disenchanted with the sport.

In germany it's
SOCCER, SOCCER, SOCCER!!!! Because the new season starts this weekend!
and everybod only talk about Bayern Munich! They are like the Yankees (or any NY team) in the US!
Horrible! I hate this and ESPN!

But on the other side, it's an advantage that ESPN has shut down all its stations in europe!
Our german sports TV has now started a only US sport channel and the will show 7 NFL games a week (4 so far), 3 NBA games (2 so far) and 4 NHL games (3 so far), but they don't show any MLB games. ESPN had up to 7 a week! Thy also have Nascar and some other motorsport series!
and of course the show fishing!!!!

The year-round football drumbeat is so annoying. Where I am, the local guys talk college football all freaking year and the national stuff is all NFL, all the time.

I never particularly liked football, but the last few years of this have turned me into a hater.

The reason the year-round football thign exists, is because NFL signed some insane deal with ESPN, where ESPN has to show over 1,000 hours of original content or something like that for football. That's why all these new shows after NFL Live came to exist (NFL 32, Insiders).

It's ridiculous.

The NFL is great. I can't get enough.

Oh I can. I enjoy the sport. Not as much at baseball but better than anything else. But honestly there is only so much you can talk about imo. Especially in season with 1 game a week. Most of it is crap. And people on ESPN are always annoying too. They enjoy hearing themselves talk for the most part.

We win our 14th in a row, and ESPN is now on their 9th notch on their panel of "stories" on the left hand side of the screen...still no Braves highlights or anything about our win-streak.

Makes sense.

And MLB Network remaining skeptical about us because when we get to the playoffs we won't be facing teams 3, 4, and 5 starters. What, so we've gotten so lucky that, in a 14-game stretch, we've missed everyone's ace or number two? Guess they missed us beating Wainwright, Miller, Strasburg, Gio, and Zimmerman during this win-streak.

Who cares what ESPN says?

Some more:

Brian (Philadelphia)

A word of warning about the Braves: everyone thought that the Nats were poised to be dominant for a long time too. And the Braves have had a lot go right this year; if you look on paper the sum of the parts has been far more than most the individual performances on that team.

Jayson Stark (1:16 PM)

I don't disagree with that. But look around the field at that team. Three every-day players who are 23, and they're all tremendous. Justin Upton is 25. No starting pitchers in their 30s with Hudson and Maholm out. No other team has this many players this young doing what these guys are doing.

Outside of Johnson, who is playing over their head?

BJ, Heyward, Uggla have all had down years.

And prior to a few weeks ago, JUp has been in a two month slump.

If anything, we still haven't played our best ball yet.

So, what is everyone's opinion of Beachy tonight? I can't watch it. I know the results look great, but he is facing the Marlins.

It seems he was lucky early on then around the 4th inning or so, he got in a rhythm.

Encouraging, even against the Marlins.

He said we had a lot go right, and he's not inherently wrong.

We've not missed a starting position player for more than 4 weeks I believe (Mac to start the season) Only lost one starter. The only spot we've been hurt injury wise is the bullpen where we lost our 2 lefty backend guys which stinks, and Martinez who may have been cut. While we've had down years from starters, Jason and Uggla haven't been that far down. They're still above average hitters. And the period where they sucked (start of the year) was likely due to injuries or not wearing prescription contacts. Since coming back from the DL Heyward has a .770ish OPS, and Uggla outside of April has been a bit better than he was then. Not amazing of course, but he's not been horrible either.

But we have had several guys posting seasons that they aren't likely (not saying they won't) to reproduce, Johnson for starters, then also Schafer. For relievers who knows if David Carpenter is for real. We do have questions, but we also as Stark fairly points out have a super young team. Only old dudes we will have are all hitting FA, Downs, Hudson, Mac (and 29 isnt' really that old) and Maholm. Next year our team right now shakes out to have 2 players over 30 for sure, Reed Johnson and Gerald Laird. We'll also likely have a reliever whether it's Loe or Martinez or someone else. Pretty insane.

What's gonna be fun is playing the speculate on the BP and bench game for next year

First it depends on if we keep Mac or not, if we keep Mac Gattis is on the bench in the same role he's in this year if not that role has opened up.

My crack at it

Gattis
Laird
Terds
Pastor
Schafer

Maybe Terds goes out for Pena, not sure what the Braves expect from him. Schafer will be an attractive trade piece fi he finishes the season strong and we would be wise to pawn him off while the iron is hot.

It took the Braves like 50 games into the season or maybe more before they got their entire starting lineup on the field. We had overlapping injuries where we had Freeman and McCann out at the same time then it was Heyward and McCann out for the same time. I would say that's overcoming adversity.

Also the Braves are 16-8 against the Dodgers, Cardinals, Pirates and Reds. I would say the Braves are battle tested and proven they can beat good teams. Maybe after they do it in the playoffs these moron's will recognize!

Yes and No, as AU said.

We've still had a fair share of injuries.

Heyward, Freeman both had DL stints, and Heyward missed a month i think with the surgery he had.

Sure, no long ones but still have has guys on the DL.

Regards to the bench/pen next year.

I'd go.

Kimbrel
Walden
Avilan
Carpenter
Varvaro

After that, I'm not sure.

I'd bring back one of Downs, EO, Venters.

Maybe two. Venters will only cost around two million. Maybe EO on a one year prove it deal.

I wouldn't trade Schafer unless it's to bring in a huge piece ala an ace.

Depends on Mac basically.

Terdo
Schafer
Laird/Gattis
Pena
?

I unlike some people in this country have a life and can live for more than half the year without football. There's a time and season for every sport. I love football too (No. 2 to baseball), but the amount of buzz the preseason is given is beyond stupid. All that Falcons-Bengals game the other night did was see who might be the fourth backup at a position or two. As for college football, some of these issues are fascinating, but do we really need a full story about every single ****ing practice?

Btw, if you scroll to bj's at bat in the bottom of the 5th, you can almost see me during his foul ball down the line. Too bad that guy stood up n blocked my camera time :Alone:
