Johnny Cueto

Playing the Waiting Game
With the excessive amount of quality starting pitchers available thru free agency this coming offseason, coupled with the struggles Cueto went through after being traded to KC (also eliminates the Q.O) and all on top of the fact that the Braves have stated their desire to obtain a veteran starter, I would like to make a run a him. It's obvious that we won't/can't make a run at Price/Geinke (and possibly Zimmerman as well) and looking at the next tier, I like Cueto. Yes I know there are "injury risk" but if his medicals check out I truly believe he can become a steal. Teams may be hesitant to give him a long-term deal with his late season struggles and "injury risk" and that may benefit the Braves. When healthy Cueto can be that "ace" we are always seeming to lack and put him into our rotation, it could be a way to get a quality veteran, top-of-the-rotation type arm at a lower price (AAV) than others. A rotation that looks like this can be really good...

1. Johnny Cueto
2. Julio Teheran
3. Shelby Miller
4. Mike Minor
5. Matt Wisler

Would you be comfortable giving Cueto a 4yr/$65-75m deal or a 5yr/$80-90m deal?

Would Cueto accept something like that?

Just giving a topic for discussion...

I would like Cueto (he's getting cheaper every minute) paired with Leake.

Miller
Leake
Teheran
Cueto
______

Could then turn around and use pitching to fix the offense.

How is Cueto "fools gold" and Samardzija not????

Samardzjia will be cheaper in number of dollars, years, has less arm mileage and is coming off a year of pitching on a bad team in a bad pitchers park. IMO he's more likely to possibly blossom into a staff ace. Barring that you should at least get useful innings throughout the term of his contract.

Cueto is going to blow up.

Who's to say Shark won't?? Samardizjia wouldn't provide that veteran leadership that we need to help these young starters.

I don't want Cueto or Samardja near the Braves, I wouldn't tough them with a 10 foot pole, they're garbage. What are we trying to recreate the Hart built Indians without the offense from the 90s? Might as well have Hart give Nagy, Ogea, and Burba a call for a tryout for the upcoming year.

I don't want them here, plain and simple. Shark is one of those pitchers that will never live up to his potential based off of stuff and Cueto is a ticking time bomb.

I would take a flier on Leake, though, I think he could be a potential bargain acquisition this upcoming year and be a solid middle of the rotation starter going forward.

But do you want Cueto or Samardzija near the Braves?

I like Cue to but I wouldn't give home 20 per. I have no clue what the FO is gonna do just like everybody else, but if they feel they can get somebody cheaper than they expected they may surprise us.

It will cost 5/100 at least to get him, moot point, he wont be a Brave.

And Shark is a nightmare waiting to happen, throws up.

Samardzjia reminds me a bit of Curt Schilling and Kevin Brown, guys who needed a while to really hit their stride then became dominant in their era.

That assumes he's healthy.

Kevin Brown had a 3.35 era his first full year as a starter. Schilling had a 2.35 era during his first year of starting (with 4 seasons of sub 3.25 FIP in his first 6 years as a starter). Both were excellent starting pitchers well before they hit their first extension, how are they even remotely similar to Samardzija, who has had one good year as a starter and been a #4 starter type his other years?

Cueto will probably get 17-18M/year for 5 years. 15M or less would represent a bargain. Years is important. 4 years with an option at 15M or less would have to be regarded as a team-friendly deal.

I'd think that deal you outlined wouldn't be "friendly" deal but more likely "friends with benefits" deal.

At that price, push your chips in on him and flip if you have to.

Im completely out on Cueto. He went down with an elbow issue earlier this year which is probably a pre-cursor to TJ. Though he seems he would fit into the new "Braves way" with elbow issues.

I would actually go for the Shark. He has been okayish in some career seasons and dominant in others. I think placing him in a fair pitching park like the Ted would help his numbers support a contract in the $15mil to $17mil range that he will probably get.
