Peterson - Thumb Ligament

I thought this was pretty significant news and didn't want to let it go by without comment. Jace looked good - really good - to me, until he stopped hitting. I thought his 2B play was excellent, as well. If, in fact, he was playing through an 80% tear in the thumb ligament for the last half of the season, I'm more hopeful that the guy I saw emerging in May was the real deal, not the guy hitting.209 the last half.

Thoughts?

if the tar effected him that much then he really needs to learn to heal over trying to play through it.

it doesn't help your team if you are playing hurt and out there stinking the place up...

I think Peterson has a small chance to be a plus starting 2b. I think there's a decent chance he's a good starting 2b if he has a platoon partner

It's stil most likely he's a jack of all trades backup infielder

The hope is that his late-season slide can be directly attributed to the injury. The "homer" in me still believes that he could be an EXTREMELY valuable super-utility player in the Zobrist mode if that's the case - maybe even one that gives you more flexibility than even Zobrist does. Jace adds the speed element that would make him an additional pinch runner threat late in games PLUS the potential to be your emergency CF (if needed) that could provide even more roster flexibility when Swanson and Albies arrive.

I don't mean that to be a knock at all - I do think he's capable of being the everyday 2B if he was asked to be - just that I think he'd be much more valuable if he hits and can be moved around. He could be that guy that allows lots of players to keep from making injuries worse by trying to play through it when they're dinged up. He or Albies could give Swanson a blow for a few days, and he could do that for Albies, whoever the 3B is, and Inciarte/Mallex as well.

To be blunt, it's an excuse. Players are hurt all the time. You typically only hear about it when they struggle.

Did it effect him, yes. Will it effect him again, yes. The key is how you recover and cope. If he can't cope with small nagging injuries, odds are he won't be very good.

torn thumb ligament is not a nagging injury.. it is one where he should have been DL'd

It isn't just that simple. You are taught from a young age to play through injuries. The phrase "throw some dirt on it" is a very popular phrase in baseball for a reason. I'm sure he thought the pain wasn't severe enough at the time. And as a rookie, I'm sure he was pressing to keep his job. It isn't his fault Freddie kept running him out there when when he was hitting poorly.

As a rookie, I am sure he thought, I better keep playing so someone doesn't come along and take my job. But if you hit .200, you are not going to keep your job.

I'm not sure if it's homersim or not, but I feel pretty confident that Jace is going to have a good year. He has a little bit of everything in his game and that could parlay into a nice season form him.

Umm, in what world is an injury that requires immobilization in a cast for 6+ weeks deemed a nagging injury? Jace is probably only good enough to be an everyday guy until he hits arb and is a non-tender candidate, but to call an injury of that serverity an excuse is pretty stupid.

I guess we will see! Hopefully this is the case and he's a beast this year. I was REALLY excited about what I saw, so I can only for more. It would be amazing if he could provide us with some much-needed stability.

If that's the case then he should have sat out. I hate hearing about players playing through injuries as an excuse for sucking. It's just that, an excuse. He chose to play through it and dealt with the consequences. I don't buy into it.

That seems extremely black and white, and not at all responsive to individual situations. If my back is sore from the grind and I decide to play through it, whatever happens is on me. But if I tear a part of my body, it's still on me, but the results CAN be explained. The only thing we can really conclude about Jace from the tail end of 2015 is he made a stupid (but completely understandable) rookie decision to stay in the lineup. I haven't heard him come out in an interview saying, "Yo, ignore my stats from this year, I hurt myself!" It's a legitimate explanation, not an excuse, an extremely important distinction that you're not really seeing.

It may be ridiculous brightside-ism, but I hope this means a Jace will be more the guy we saw in the first half and less the guy we saw in the second.

I guess I still mostly see him as a marginal starter and a potentially valuable bench piece,

This is probably the second "I'm healthy and/or in the best shape of my life" article. Freeman and his wrist was the first one.

Why should he have taken himself out? Fredi is in charge of the lineup. No competitor is going to take themselves out of the lineup. Especially a rookie trying to keep a job.

Fredi had an undisclosed 80% tear in his cerebrum last year. He's doing better, but I did just read a Fangraphs article where he said that A.J. would be a good managerial candidate, so it looks like he still has some rehab to do.
