International News, Rumor and Signing Thread

Who represents Maitan? I bet its someone with ties to past Braves signings. The Braves have probably been in this kids life for 4 years now. The South American market isnt all about money, sometimes its about building trust with the kid and his family. What he signs for now is a drop in the bucket compared to what he can earn if he makes the majors.

Uh oh. Keith Law shared some somewhat distressing news about Maitan recently:

"My understanding is that at one point Maitan and/or his representative broke an agreement with Atlanta, agreed to another number with a different club, and then Atlanta came in and offered more, and then they went back to the original arrangement just with a higher dollar figure. So it says to me if somebody calls tomorrow and says, hey, here's $8 million instead of the four and change supposedly that Atlanta has offered, why wouldn't Maitan and/or his people take that deal? They are not legally bound to anything right now. Major League Baseball cannot enforce an illegal agreement, so why wouldn't they just switch it up if it's that much more money?"

I don't find anything distressing there. We're going to pay him - the question is just "How much?".

It's worrisome in that the so called sanctity of the handshake agreement is tainted. I guess it would depend when the agreement was broken. It sounds like it was before last July, since the expactaion is still 4.25m

Slow news days and people looking for "scoops". Same as the "Harvey willing to discuss extension with the Mets" mess was yesterday. Other than "when are the O's signings of Fowler and Gallardo going to be official", there's simply nothing much to talk about until someone gets hurt or games start.

I like the part where he says we all need to wait until July 2 to see if the rumors are true.

FWIW - as mentioned elsewhere, the fact that Eddie managed the team that won the Venezuelan Winter League likely doesn't hurt our always strong ties with Venezuelan players and trainers.

Can't recall where I saw the OP, but the Braves have as strong a history in Venezuela as any team, so there's a recognition factor among the prospects and their "agents."

Dodgers sign Cuban right-hander Yasiel Sierra, contract reportedly six years, $30-$31 million. It also gives them the monopoly on players named "Yasiel."

From MLBTR:

The Mariners have reached an agreement with Cuban center fielder Guillermo Heredia, reports Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune. Terms rportedly include a $500 K signing bonus, and the contract is still pending a physical, according to Dutton. The 25-year-old Heredia is old enough and has enough professional experience that he is exempt from international bonus pools, so the Mariners are free to sign him for any length of time and any dollar amount.

Heredia played professionally in Cuba from 2009-14, amassing exactly 1400 plate appearances and compiling a .285/.376/.418 batting line. Back in late January, Baseball America’s Ben Badler wrote that while Heredia is a standout defender in center field with plus speed and a strong arm, there are significant questions about his bat.
