“I’ve decided to step away from baseball,” LaRoche said, citing personal reasons. “I’ll have more in a day or two.
“I want to sleep on it again. I didn’t come in yesterday because I wanted to make sure it was the right move and make an emotional decision. I’m confident it is. Out of my respect for these guys and [general manager] Rick [Hahn] they asked me to give it a day or two to confirm.”

Apparently the abrupt announcement was the result of the White Sox GM asking him to stop bringing his kid to work so much (every day). Sounds like it was handled sensitively at the time, but guess LaRoche still took exception to the request.
 
I like LaRoche but he was wrong here. Nobody working for somebody else should bring their kid to work 100% of the time. They ask him to dial it back some so he quit. No way I'd have walked away from 13 million and especially over something like that. Telling your son you can't take him to work everyday doesn't mean you love him any less.
 
I respect LaRoche's decision and it's his right to handle this any way he pleases, I suppose. For me though, it just seems like a bizarre parenting decision to allow your teenage son to come to work with you everyday. Their FO was obviously uneasy about it, and I have to think at least some of the players and coaches were as well.
 
He was told that it wasn't "bring your kid to work" day every day, so he walked away from $13 million and the game he loves, or once did? I hope he had more reasons than that for retiring.

Money isn't a huge motivator for some people, especially when they have made enough to never worry about money again.

Maybe baseball away from his family just wasn't worth it for him. When he had his son there it was, when he was told he couldn't have his son there it wasn't.

I gotta say, if someone handed me $70 million you'd have to give me a tremendous offer to work after that and spend that much time away from family.
 
I don't see how LaRoche was wrong here. Not saying the White Sox organization is necessarily wrong either. But 20-30 years ago it seems like you saw this quite frequently, with Griffey, Ripken, Prince Fielder, etc. I guess the LaRoche name isn't quite baseball royalty.

Does anyone actually think they'd tell Chris Sale not to bring his kid everyday?

I see nothing wrong with what the White Sox asked. The executive is right in trying to set some reasonable limits. It's work. The kid shouldn't be allowed to be there all the time. What if every player did that?

This is hardly you're average job. And it's Spring Training. LaRoche won't get hardly anytime to see his kid for the next 6 months.

I think you work something out with LaRoche instead of just telling him, "dial it back."

From what I read his son was traveling with the team like Dusty's kid.

His wife arranged his school schedule to be able to travel with him the entire season so this wasn't just spring training.
