GDT 8/14/2013: Phillies @ Braves

Right now, I am assuming Pastor is down. A sprain and getting it checked on an off-day doesn't bode well. I have to assume LaStella comes up at this point. He is our best option for depth with both Pastor and Uggla out. Start LaStella and have Janish stay in the super-sub role.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news my friend, but with STRuggs and Pastor out, our 2B is currently in the game. Expect much pt for Janish

I never said it doesn't. But he's steadily gotten a little better control everytime out and a little better feel for his offspeed stuff.

I agree with you, I think he's looked good for where he's at. But he can (and will) get better and more reliable with time.

IMO he is showing signs. We shall see

The last 2 starts he has had a much better curveball. That's the pitch that he has struggled with the most this season. When he's able to throw his curveball for strikes and it has good break to it then he can shutdown any offense. The last 2 starts are the first time I've seen him and thought he was getting close to where he was last year. But I don't wanna make too much of it because it has been the Nationals and Phillies offenses which are both very bad.

Has Turner played as a hitter's park this year? I don't know if it's just because our offense has been so good, but it seems balls like Simmons just hit that land in gaps at Turner, don't land in gaps at other parks and get caught.

The other reason I would pitch Beachy over Medlen is because Beachy has better stuff so he can get away with have a little worse control. Medlen has that killer changeup but Beachy's isn't bad and Beachy's curveball is much better on a consistent basis than Medlen's when he's right. They're both equals when it comes to their fastball.

Good start by Simmons, tough break by the bounce costing him a triple though. BJ made contact for a change, hopefully Janish can get him in here.

Its absolutely ridiculous how good Wren is at building a bullpen.

Roger McDowell deserves a lot of credit too. Braves have the 2nd lowest team ERA in baseball since 2006. 1st is the Dodgers and they play there homeruns in a great pitcher's park. Turner Field according to park factors has actually favored hitters the last few years.

Just think about it. Braves could conceivably be replacing Vavaro/Downs with EOF/Venters next year. WOW!

Preaching to the choir.

As I always said Roger > Leo

Janish doesn't hit (outside of the base hit tonight on a bad pitch), but he sure shows that shortstop range and arm at second. Impressive defensively, esp. after watching Uggla out there so long.

Would be insane.

If we can't keep EOF, i would be ok with bringing back Downs for a couple more years.

Would definitely tender Venters though, worth the risk.
