One option will be to trade some of the international slot money.

Another is the bundling option that was discussed in recent article by Ben Badler.

Rule changes dont go the Braves way. We were the best draft and follow team and they nixed that. We came out on the wrong end of the expanded wild card rules. We came out on the wrong end of the original wild card change too losing to wild card teams in the NLCS in the 90's. We lost TBS because of a rule change that was supposedly meant to stop the yankees crazy payroll.

MLB.com just released its top 30 prospects for the July 2 signing period:

No surprise that Maitan is at the top of the list. The scouting report is interesting, says some scouts see him as a once in a generation player.

The writeups all list who the favorite is to sign the player. Maitan is the only player in the top 16 we are expected to sign, which was a little disappointing, but we are expected to sign five of the players from 17-25 in the rankings. Gutierrez is ranked 17 and Severino at 18. I was under the impression that Gutierrez was a top 10 guy, but I might be wrong about that. Either way, excited about this!

We are also listed as the favorite to sign Yenci Pena, ranked #21, Livan Soto, ranked #23, and Juan Contreras, ranked #25.

That list is a little depressing, quite frankly, but these rankings could vary pretty widely. If that list is anywhere near a consensus, though, it looks like the Padres are actually the ones who will be doing what we thought we would be. I was expecting multiple top-10 guys.

Six of the top 25 is not depressing to me considering Gutierrez was right behind Maitan last year.

I guess the reason I say that is that guys 17-25 are the kind you can pretty easily get in any international period without going over your budget. The rumors were that we were going to absolutely blow it out a la the Yankees from a couple years ago, which leads people to believe it's multiple top 10 guys. After those kind of rumors, 1 in the top 16 is pretty underwhelming.

I'm not saying it wouldn't be a really good class, I'm just saying it's not exactly what you'd expect if your goal is specifically to blow through your budget and not be able to sign anyone of consequence for 2 years.

Now, again, these rankings are just one opinion, and obviously with guys this age the scouting reports are probably going to vary quite a bit. I'm just saying that this one ranking doesn't excite me the way I hoped it would. Obviously Maitan is a beast, though. If we get him alone, it's still definitely worth it for us to go over budget. I just hope these guys are better than this ranking suggests.

Great post and I agree. I'm really excited about Severino and Guiterrez though. Second hand reports by Kiley last year had both top 10. With Cruz, Pache and this years class, I'm ecstatic. Of course I'm with the group. If we're going over, let's go!

Lazarito was in there right? I know the Pads are favorites, but we are probably right behind them I'd think.

He was the only player that I didn't see listed with the place he'd likely sign. Hopefully that means we're still in it for him. That would make this list much better for us.
