Groome is pitching. tonight, actually.
Where at? I thought they deemed him ineligible for the season?

I was listening to that podcast Coppy did with Jonah Keri that was posted on the board. Here's the link again:

At around 44:00 there's an interesting comment. Coppy was talking about how tanking doesn't really work in baseball considering the top picks are so far away. He said "Last year our first four picks were all high school kids. We'll probably take a high school kid this year too."
It's possible he meant take a high school kid in the first four picks but the context of talking about taking to get a top pick made it sound more like he was talking about who we'd be taking with the first pick. If they think Groome is going to be there at 3 that would be a pretty interesting comment.

Probably best not to read too much into that comment. It sounds like he was trying to make a point, and we all know Coppolella isn't the most dynamic public communicator.

If you listen to the podcast, it's obvious that this comment wasn't some type of red herring. Their philosophy is to draft toolsy high school talent that they can get into their player development program.
Probably saying the high school thing to try and throw off the teams ahead of us in the draft so Lewis can fall into our slot.
Of course, the teams ahead of us can just take the player they want with out regard to what we might do....![]()

It could be that they respect the Braves scouting reputation to the point where they would allow our evaluation of the talent to affect their choice. Not saying it would be the dominant factor in their choice. But if it were a close call and they were aware that the Braves liked a particular player better it might tip the scales.

The comment doesn't say the Braves prefer the high school talent in the draft. He said we're probably going to take a high schooler. Maybe we have Lewis number 1 on the board but feel he's going to get taken by the Phils. Maybe we love Puk but think the Reds are going to grab him.
I don't see either the Phillies or the Reds altering their draft strategy because the Braves GM said they'd probably be taking a high schooler. They wouldn't even know which high schooler we'd like. There are 4 or 5 that could legitimately be talked about at 3.
